Read it just now in last week's WSJ and recall something on it last week in NYT but cannot link. It's a new policy by DeBlassio in NYC.

The short version: Let's say you are a developer and want to build an apartment complex in NYC. To get a license you must build a mix:
Really nice places for the rich.
Middle priced places for the working man.
Shacks for those on welfare.

The goal: If all of the different classes are living in the same complex we will enjoy the fruits of diversity. Currently, pricing causes 'class segregation' and we must wipe that out.

Thoughts?

So you take those who worked their asses off to get out of the low income areas and force them to now live with the same bums they worked so hard to get away from? Wonderful. Nothing like freedom.

You're not forcing them. You're forcing the builder. The rich still have the option to not buy in the mixed income development.

You should read some Thomas Sowell on this issue. He calls it 'the right to disassociate' or 'the right to part company.'

I did it when I was 17 years old. I had full rides to USL (now ULL) and Centenary. USL was our local college and my parents wanted me to take their offer. But I had done early admissions at USL and realized that it was a crappy school (apologies to all you ULL grads). I went to Centenary specifically to avoid contact with morons.

I currently live on a street where the average home value is about a Million. I planned it by design many years ago with the express motivation of avoiding contact with poor people.

If I want to be around poor people I'll hang out at the liquor store on the day welfare checks get cashed.

I would make a wager that the ones creating this law live in gated communities completely isolated from low income.

Remember, the laws these individuals make are not for the lawmaker, just the lowly members of the collective (masses)

Seems like this will simply make the housing shortage in NY even worse. The rich there get ample government subsidization through rent stabilization.

There will be a noticeable decline in new housing being built.

That was the conclusion of the WSJ editorial.

Really? If you're not sure then you really have zero clue as to how the world works.

in your ideal state, how would it handle lazy people who either don't work or work in a shoddy manner?
