ARGENTINA AND CHILE PUT AN END TO THE MAGALLANES CONTROVERSY

Through a joint statement issued following Milei's visit, they reaffirm Chilean sovereignty over the "entirety" of the strait. The Chilean president also reaffirmed support for Argentina regarding its dispute with the United Kingdom over the Malvinas.

The statement

The Presidents of the Argentine Republic and the Republic of Chile held a working meeting in Santiago, during which they noted the excellent state of bilateral relations and the high level of agreement existing between the two Governments. Both Leaders reaffirmed that the bond between Argentina and Chile constitutes a priority space for coordination in South America and agreed to maintain the frequency of dialogue at the highest level.

The Presidents highlighted the intensity of the work carried out by both administrations in recent months, which included the holding in Santiago of the VII Meeting of the Permanent Consultation System of both Foreign Ministries, the Administrative Commission of the Mining Integration and Complementarity Treaty, and the Administrative Commission of the Trade Agreement, as well as the Joint Commission for Technical and Scientific Cooperation in Buenos Aires. They agreed on the convenience of reactivating the remaining active bilateral mechanisms during the current semester.

They valued the approval of new Specific Additional Protocols within the framework of the Mining Integration and Complementarity Treaty, a unique instrument of its kind in the world, which will enable the development of large-scale binational projects on both sides of the mountain range and the attraction of long-term investments. The Presidents instructed their Foreign Ministers to proceed with their signing in a timely manner.

They emphasized the existing complementarity in energy matters and the character of the Argentine Republic as a stable and reliable supplier of gas and oil for Chile.

They highlighted the dynamism of bilateral trade exchange, the fluidity with which it develops, and the recent advances in market access. They agreed that integration is evident in the ease with which people, goods, and investments flow across the common border, and in the need to continue modernizing and streamlining the operation of border crossings.

They agreed that transnational organized crime, drug trafficking, and terrorism constitute common threats that demand coordinated and regional-scope responses. They reaffirmed the commitment of both countries, as founding signatories, to the Santiago Regional Commitment against Transnational Organized Crime, and agreed to deepen bilateral cooperation in this area through the full utilization of existing mechanisms.

They highlighted the uniqueness of the association between Argentina and Chile in Antarctic matters: the mutual recognition of respective rights, the co-administration of specially protected areas, the Combined Naval Antarctic Patrol sustained for more than twenty-five years, and the joint promotion of the proposal for a Marine Protected Area in the Western Antarctic Peninsula and the southern Scotia Arc.

Both Presidents agreed that the legal regime of the Strait of Magallanes is that established by the 1881 Boundary Treaty and the 1984 Treaty of Peace and Friendship, instruments that are fully in force and have a definitive character for both States, and that establish the sovereignty of the Republic of Chile over the entirety of the strait.

Likewise, President Kast reiterated the support of the Government of Chile for the legitimate sovereignty rights of the Argentine Republic over the Malvinas Islands, South Georgia, South Sandwich Islands, and the surrounding maritime spaces, and ratified the need for the Governments of the Argentine Republic and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to resume negotiations in order to find, as soon as possible, a peaceful and definitive solution to the sovereignty dispute in accordance with the pertinent resolutions of the United Nations and other regional and multilateral forums.

For his part, President Milei thanked President Kast on behalf of the Argentine Government for the traditional support of the Government of Chile on the Malvinas Islands Question and expressed that the efforts of the Chilean Government will be valued in order to prevent the consolidation of unilateral illegal logistical activities in the disputed area, in matters of exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbon and fishing resources, which are contrary to the resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly.

The Republic of Chile values the commitment undertaken by the Argentine Republic aimed at materializing as soon as possible the detention and extradition of Galvarino Apablaza, a fugitive accused of the murder of Senator Jaime Guzmán.

Finally, the leaders reaffirmed their commitment to addressing all matters of common interest through the institutional channels established between both Governments
