Have to admit, I absolutely did not believe she would do this. Have to give her props.

quote:

Governor Kay Ivey called a special session on redistricting on Friday.

According to the proclamation, the session will start at 4 p.m. on Monday.

quote:

Ivey said she expected the session to last less than five days.

quote:

House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter (R-Rainsville) and Senate President Pro-Tem Garlan Gudger (R-Cullman) issued a joint statement applauding Ivey's call for a special session.

I have been hearing about MeeMaw for years. How long has she been and will be governor?

She is term limited and we are voting on her replacement this year. Will likely be Tommy Tuberville.

She ascended to office in 2017 after Robert Bentley resigned, and then was reelected twice. She recently became the longest serving female governor in American history and the longest continuously serving governor in Alabama history.

Some "highlights" of her tenure include calling a special session for Jeff Sessions's Senate seat, even though she had no obligation to do so, which eventually led to the Roy Moore smear campaign and Dud Jones being elected to Senate, and following the lead of Dim govs and leftist "health professionals" during the COVID scam. I did my part to vote for literally any Republican who could possibly unseat her at every opportunity.

ETA: Regardless, at least she's doing something here. Even though a 5 day session gives the state legislature a razor thin margin of error.

By who? She isn't seeking reelection and only she can call a special session. She proved quite clearly during COVID that no one can "force her" to do anything a Republican governor should do.

State Dims are very unhappy about this, which means it is absolutely the correct move.

quote:

"This is an all out attack on the black community!" State Rep. Napoleon Bracy (D-Prichard) posted on Facebook.

There are absolutely black members of our state legislature who will be voting to advance this effort. I guess those black people don't count.

LINK

They even used their potty words!

quote:

State Sen. Merika Coleman (D-Pleasant Grove) also offered a terse condemnation of the special session before doing a nearly 45-minute Facebook live rant on the subject and other issues.

quote:

"WE ARE GOING INTO SPECIAL SESSION!" Coleman wrote on Facebook. "This is some bullshite, and I try not to curse on social media!!! How many more seats do the Alabama Republicans want?"

We even got a statement from the state representative who sued Hoover City Schools for a boost to an election campaign!

quote:

State Rep. Juandalynn Givan also released a statement, accusing Republican lawmakers of trying to bring back Jim Crow.

"This is a terrible day for the State of Alabama," Givan wrote. "It appears that Republicans won't be satisfied until they hold every elected local, state and federal office and take them by any means necessary. This special session is nothing more than an attempt to turn the clock back to the days of Jim Crow. If the Alabama Legislature moves forward in their effort to remove black members of the state's congressional delegation and make it impossible for any black Alabamian to get elected to Congress, then how long will it be before they reinstate the poll tax and literacy tests? I can only hope that members of the Alabama Legislature will take a long, hard look before they move forward with this and realize the damage it will cause."

No props will be given because she was pushed into doing it after being relentlessly cooked for the last three days moreso than she has ever been….and rightfully so.

Credit goes to Marshall, Wes Allen, and talk radio around the state.

Uh, all of them they are legally entitled to.

Both in tough races that are very important to state lobbying backing them...if you're wondering why the Ivy pivot. Same money kept her in office.

True enough, but MeeMaw has proven, to our detriment, that no one can force her to do anything.

The truth of the matter has always been the Democratic Party could give a shite less about blacks getting elected vs. getting DEMOCRATS elected.

If blacks started regularly voting for the GOP, the Democratic Party would drop the “Jim Crow” talk faster than people could blink their eyes.

There’s no party more vicious to blacks who do happen to be Republicans than the Democratic Party.

I think the court case will handle that part.

She did not want and was pushed into it

Yes, she did the right thing at the end of the day, my guess is she did it to ensure a “legacy” - she wants to be remembered fondly

Truth is I don’t care, just glad we got the result we needed

I hope 5 days is enough time to get it done. With our state legislature, never can be too confident in how quickly they might move.
