Medicaid expansion has not reduced ER visits, multiple links inside

We were told that medicaid expansion made sense because it would reduce ER visits, which are expensive and borne by everyone.
Well, 3 years after medicaid expansion began, um..... yea...
wapo: evidence that expanding medicaid has increased ER usage
forbes: medicaid expansion causes surge in ER visits
california ER use jumps after medicaid expansion, 3 years after fact
Considering medicaid actually reimburses hospitals less than uninsured patients, how exactly is this development a net positive?
another link finding correlation between increased ER usage and medicaid expansion
medicaid was expanded in many states 2-3 years ago, so it's not like you can pull the "too soon to tell" card.

A new study released yesterday in the New England Journal of Medicine suggests that the assumption that the ACA would lead to lower ER use was wrong as Medicaid expansion in Oregon produced a spike in ER visits. A surge in ER use will likely produce adverse health consequences for many and may be contributing to skyrocketing Medicaid expansion spending, which was 49% higher per enrollee in 2015 than the government expected.

Medicaid doesn't make regular doctors available the instant they want to see one. Pretty sure the type that use the ER as their PCP aren't going to start making appointments and such. But grats, Obama, you made them "insured".

It's the Govt, of course they were going to be wrong. Look, Govt can't run healthcare, it's that simple. They can't run anything, and it's been proven, multiple times.....

No one takes adult Medicaid. Pay is shite. It's going to have to reimburse waaaaay better to entice anyone to take them. It pays about half of Medicare rates to primary care. Giving them "insurance" fixes nothing.

Had a lady a few weeks ago come in to the Pharmacy and asked for a recommendation for her childs' fever..I said liquid Ibuprofen... she asked me to go get a bottle and wanted to know the price... It was 7 dollars or something.... she then asked " Medicaid pay for that?" I said no mam not without a prescription...
her response."I'll just take him to the ER then."
This made me so damn mad.... instead of buying it she decides to make the child suffer for a few more hours of waiting in an ER room just to see a doc to get it for free..

why does medicaid even exist? Just sell narcan and bullet removal kits at the corner store and we won't need medicaid anymore

Coverage doesn't equate to some one being responsible with it. A government program whether insurance or not will not change some ones behavior unless said program or insurance has stipulations they must abide by.

I got the inside scoop on the CBO's projections for the coming football season.
Georgia Tech* and Arkansas* are both going undefeated and meeting the the national championship. Print the shirts baby.
*Just put in your two teams if you like.

I was wondering about providers versus facilities, as parkland hospital in Dallas baby deliveries are 70-plus percent illegal/anchor baby, and I would wager they are all on Medicaid because the bebido is an American citizen.
Parkland would've gone under long ago.

So....
Your saying that people who get free-shite for free don't care how much it costs someone else?
Who'd a thunk??

Correct. I made this point when the ACA provisions were being discussed. Pregnant women in this country are 100% covered by the government for all care - both prenatal and labor. It's been this way for decades. Yet, less than one in ten eligible women use this coverage for prenatal care. Instead, they just show up in labor at the nearest hospital (and often have significant complications as a result.)
Giving somebody something subsidized isn't going to magically turn them into a responsible person.

so one solution is make medicaid patients pay more when they use ER:
larger copays.
larger copays.

A huge issue with healthcare that many on the left simply do not understand is the vast chasm between us and europeans when it comes to diet, exercise, and healthy behavior in general.
You can't blame lack of healthcare for obesity and eating like crap.

I might be a a sole voice here who does not find it sad that people are getting the medical care they need finally.

These people are receiving the same treatment before ACA which was promised to eliminate unnecessary ER visits, lower our premiums and decrease the rate of healthcare increases. It failed at all the above.

No one saw this coming...

1) The people you speak of were already cared for in the ER. This has not changed.
2) the people you speak of are not using The system as intended. They continue to abuse.
3) this was a massive wealth transfer from the middle class to wealthy hospital management companies. I'll bet you are a huge fan of this.

So you're saying people who had access to care decided to seek that care, even if they did it in an inefficient manner in the first few years?
Shocked.
Shocked.
