Kentucky is one of five states (along with North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin) where U.S. Senate vacancies are filled only by special election, with no gubernatorial appointment power.

pewresearch.org

Key Details on Kentucky's Current Law In 2024, the Republican-led Kentucky legislature passed (and overrode Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear’s veto of) a bill (HB 622) that fully removed the governor from the process for filling U.S. Senate vacancies.

apnews.com

This changed the prior system (updated in 2021), under which the governor had to appoint from a list of three nominees submitted by the state executive committee of the same political party as the departing senator.

Now, upon a vacancy (e.g., due to death), the governor must call a special election. The winner serves the remainder of the unexpired term. Timing follows state election procedures (typically with notice requirements, such as proclamations at least 56 days before the election).

ballotpedia.org

This setup ensures the seat remains vacant until the special election is held, preventing any interim appointment by the governor (currently a Democrat, while both Kentucky Senate seats are held by Republicans). The change was motivated in part by concerns over potential vacancies involving Sen. Mitch McConnell.

For the most authoritative source, check the Kentucky Revised Statutes or official legislative records on vacancies in Congress.

Yea. He and his bitch family shouldn’t get privacy while he is a paid public employee. You want privacy go to a private job. It’s insane he has been on life support for two weeks and we also had a house rep miss 100 days for depression. It’s unacceptable to not be able to do your job that long in the public sector.

What do I know, but it sounds like they won't have turtles vote to do anything before midterms.

We know he is a no to anything needed, so who cares....BUT Schumer who is scared of losing his seat can shut down govt because they don't have turtles vote?

Whatchall think?

Teddy Kennedy got that act through. It is useless....as any visitor or person in the hospital can hear entire read outs of a patients history. If the curtain is pulled shut...all medical staff are good.

It wouldn't apply to a politico getting paid to represent.

Looks like Kentucky just passed a new law that requires the governor to call a special election instead of allowing him to appoint a replacement.
