This is so perplexing. I live in New Orleans which depends on tourism and the locals generally welcome tourists with open arms.

I saw an article yesterday about locals squirting tourists with water guns in Barcelona and cities in Italy.

This morning I read an article about the Lourve shutting down in response to “mass tourism.”

quote:

Just a day earlier, coordinated anti-tourism protests swept across southern Europe. Thousands rallied in Mallorca, Venice, Lisbon and beyond, denouncing an economic model they say displaces locals and erodes city life. In Barcelona, activists sprayed tourists with water pistols — a theatrical bid to "cool down" runaway tourism.

The Louvre's spontaneous strike erupted during a routine internal meeting, as gallery attendants, ticket agents and security personnel refused to take up their posts in protest over unmanageable crowds, chronic understaffing and what one union called "untenable" working conditions.

Protesting tourism just seems like such an out of touch first-world problem.

Maybe they should cut down on their low quality immigration instead.

They are lucky they are still getting as many tourists as they are.

They are exhausted from their 4 days of a 7 hour work day with 2 hours of breaks and demanding a 5 hour work day with 3 of it being breaks.

Tourism is the least of their concerns with the 3rd world bums they freely let in. France doesn’t stand a chance with all the Muslims silently taking the country over.

If they don't fix their immigration problems, and by that I mean closing their borders and deporting a bunch they've already let in, they won't have to worry about "mass tourism" much longer anyway.

Joe Q Public in Europe doesn’t like mass tourism nor mass migration. It’s the politicians that screw ‘em.

Mass tourism prices out the locals earning local salaries. In Barcelona for example there’s a housing crises because locals can’t afford the sky high rents and there’s no availability. This is because of AirBnB.

Prices in restaurants and shops are crazy high too because of tourists. None of the prices align with local salaries. To say nothing of mass crowds overwhelming infrastructure.

This is happening in cities across the USA, too. Particularly New Orleans. Stay in hotels when you travel.

Tourists don’t set menu prices. Sounds like capitalism.

Take away tourism and the cities crumble from lack of revenue. Who do you think eats in the restaurants, shops, pays for transportation, etc?

Those “poor” people that say they can’t afford to live there are often times working in tourism based jobs

I know your liberal brain won't comprehend this but there are many times when an AirBnB first someone's travel plans better than a hotel... Also, do you not understand that the people that own those AirBnB's are business owners just like the owners of the hotels?

Same goes for an AirBnB...

I’ve had the fortune of seeing a lot of these places before they were invaded. These are some of the most important and beautiful and historic places in the world. With that being said there’s some of the greatest places on earth right here in the United States it’s time we start spending our money here

Why do you so often make such broad generalized statements that are often inaccurate? Tourism accounts for around 4% Paris’s economy. It accounts for around 14% of Barcelona’s.

Of course tourism is important to both, but there are some legitimate concerns in some of these places due to growing numbers of tourists combined with an infrastructure that isn’t keeping up with the numbers.

We are fairly well traveled 30+ countries and really dont see much of this. They tend to not like cruise ships, I dont blame them, looks like a heard of cattle.

Its a fine line between tourist and traveler. Americans and orientals seem to like the 32 cities in 13 days trips, where you see and meet no one.

We just spent 2 weeks between Dubrovnik and Split- about 150 miles. Try to really see a small area, learn some of the language (and try to use it!) meet and get to know people. We have been invited into peoples homes, meals with families, ...

Most places we have been seem to enjoy the personal interaction, they don't care for the camera clickers - those there to just get a picture and move on.
