My memories of Buckhead are from over 20 years ago, so things may have changed. 
Or maybe I was thinking hippies instead of hipsters.

The business section of Buckhead sucks now. They took out all the fun stuff (probably 20 years ago) and just left nice restaurants and malls and hotels and now it's just giant attraction for thugs and tourists.
The Buckhead neighborhoods (like where the guy who got shot lived) are actually pretty cool. Huge old trees, nice homes, good community (believe it or not a lot of very normal Republican types). We really enjoyed living in Buckhead but didn't want to live under the thumb of a mayor who hates us and an APD that does its best but isn't really equipped to protect us.

Actually, this is one of the worst times for random attacks and armed robberies.
There is a small percentage of criminals that are out all night in drug induced binges that are still up in the early part of the day looking to score more drugs, money for more drugs, or one last laugh before crashing.
As the day gets warmer and the sun gets brighter, most call it a day and head in to get some rest.
I have investigated random attacks and robberies at day break consistent with this theory. Use caution on Friday-Sunday mornings and the morning following a holiday especially.
