Between this and the police chief circus, I think people have seen Kip's true colors over the past couple of years. He is an ends justify the means politician.

Costco and Celtic Studios petitioned in order to get Baton Rouge to fulfill its $7 million of incentives approved in May 2013. $5.5 million of road improvements are more than a decade's worth of property tax differential.
Don't pretend these annexation efforts were initiated by the property owners.
You can doubt that I have any inside knowledge, but even so there is more than enough evidence available to cause suspicion as to the motives of the East Baton Rouge Metro Council and the Mayor-President's office. They are not looking out for the welfare of the parish as a whole in these matters.

Annexation of major properties throughout the parish has been discussed for months as a strategy to make it more difficult for St. George to incorporate.

City-parish officials have also made efforts to annex L'Auberge Casino, which brings in about $7 million annually in gaming revenue. They were in talks with LSU officials, who have property that would give the city a path to L'Auberge.
quote:LINK I stand by my earlier assertion that specific property owners have been contacted by representatives from the Mayor-President's office regarding the costs and benefits of petitioning for annexation. Other property owners who could establish the necessary connections have been told they need not apply.
That's challenged the city to find narrow paths of smaller property owners who are willing to sign on, giving them a way to reach the major properties like the mall.

Lets ditch the St. George name, I think St. Norman sounds better.

You're learning from Russian, copy and paste my entire post; thank you.
People know what I said.
You don't have to be like Russian, I've read your stuff and you usually have a lot to say. You don't need to act the fool too.

How does a bankrupt city and school system benefit the whole parish?
If this was about schools, it would have been a small community school district. Your leaders failed you because of their ambitions, greed, and short sightedness.
This isn't Baton Rouges fault. They are responding to a punch with a punch. The problem is the people you accepted as your leaders(without question for some reason, very scary) bungled this whole thing.

Have you forgotten that st.george only came about after trying to form the SEBR school district? Why does the size of the district matter? Compared to ebrpss it would be smaller anyway.

The city wouldn't go bankrupt and would probably thrive if the school system was up to par.

It was all about schools and after multiple failed attempts at an ISD, the promoters went for the city after being told that's what they needed to do.

It's nobodies "fault". It is what it is.
BR has not grown over the past several decades because of federal interference and the lack of foresight by leaders since the 50s.
The Feds and the local leaders did us in in the 60s when the judge took over the schools. Federal interference also interfered with the annexation processes back in the day when there was a city council.
The result is a screwed up city limits.
It's not Kip's fault, or anyone else's; Kip has to do this. It's his job to look after the entire parish.
But those who pushed the CATS tax through also divided the parish. I think that was a terrible precedent. It's sort of SG in reverse.
For me it's all about schools. I figure the sheriff, the mayor, the fire departments, and the others can work things out as they always have, but I have given up on the school board.

I haven't forgotten at all. That was a better plan that had some merit and may have actually had postive results. Just because you were called racist was no reason to ditch the plan. Then Lionel Rainey got a hold of it and turned it into the poorly conceived, bloated plan it is now

The school district proposal was voted down by the State Legislature but the proponents were told that incorporating would greatly increase their chances of it passing on a subsequent vote. The proponents didn't randomly change their mission overnight.
St. George wouldn't be guaranteed its own school district even if it were to incorporate although the chances would greatly increase.

The push for a city came after two, long tough fights which were blocked by Baton Rouge Democrats.
The push for a city came after two, long tough fights which were blocked by Baton Rouge Democrats.
quote:
A New Strategy
The St. George movement was born at the State Capitol this past spring, as Browning worked with State Sen. Mack “Bodi” White to form an independent school district.
It was the second time they tried to pass bills forming the new district in the southeast part of the parish. Both times, they ran up against fierce opposition from Baton Rouge Democrats, who accused them of trying to divide the parish in a way that would bankrupt the school system.
In the end, Browning and White couldn’t clear the high bar they needed to get a key piece of their legislation passed -- a two-thirds vote in the state House of Representatives. In the press conference where they announced they were pulling the bill, White alluded to what would become the campaign for St. George. He suggested the supporters could get the school district they wanted by incorporating their own city.
It wasn’t the first time frustrated residents had floated the idea of forming a new city in the southwestern or southeastern parts of the parish. But Browning, when he brought the proposal for an independent school district to the legislature, initially hadn’t seen the need to fight two battles at once.
Until the legislative session, when over and over again, legislators said they wouldn’t approve the breakaway school district because it wasn’t part of its own city. It wasn’t like Central, or Zachary, or any of those other new school districts that had come before -- though the law doesn’t require a school district to be aligned with a city.
So when Browning, White, and the other leaders of the effort realized they didn’t have the votes, they decided to take the route implicitly suggested by their opponents. They decided to incorporate their own city.

That is a whole different argument. I disagree with the taxing mechanism, and with providing service to those who arent paying for it(still unsure why those getting untaxed bus service are mad about it).
SEBR is against public transportation for some reason, even though they love to complain about people not working. Baton Rouge could not afford the national black eye of ending public transit because its citizens are against it
I am all for repealing the CATS tax, but believe CATS should be funded. It should come from the same bucket as roads(which SEBR would be even more against)

Probably because its costly and horribly inefficient due to BR's awful urban sprawl.

I've learned that from these threads.

So we should exacerbate the problem by making more bad decisions? You can't live in a bubble, no matter what Lionel Rainey tells you
