The database goes back nearly 100 years, with entries dating to the 1920s, and it isn’t simply a database of transgender athletes. The site’s own methodology combines transgender athletes with athletes it classifies as having Differences of Sex Development (DSDs), as well as an Other category for males who participated under various rule exceptions.

It also includes certain explicitly mixed-sex events, competitions all the way down to kindergarten, and activities such as billiards and darts where gender is not a clear physical advantage. This even tracks things like acting awards, pageants, and chess. Further, this is a global database covering essentially every level of competition from kinder/elementary (where boys and girls commonly compete together) to intramural to professional.

Most importantly, the 20,000+ number isn’t 20,000 athletes as it implies. Their current database has roughly 21,000 individual result entries but only around 1,200 athlete listings, and the same athlete can generate multiple entries by competing repeatedly over multiple years. They even count things like finishing 1st in a field of one as a first-place finish and 3rd in a field of three as a top-three finish.

So after aggregating nearly a century of results from around the world, multiple categories of athletes, every level of competition, and individual results from every event an athlete enters, you get roughly 21,000 entries.

So yeah, the thing you are concerned about about is pretty rare. I mean 1,200 athletes, globally, going back almost 100 years, across basically any type of competitive event is basically the definition of rare.

You make valid points, but the historical rarity isn't the issue. Is it happening? Is the historical trend up? The girls are what matters.

A lot of bad things in this world can be considered rare, but it doesn't mean we should look the other way or avoid taking precautions.
