I'm so pissed Jindal wrecked the oil market. What a dastardly plan!

If he doesn't spend it on infrastructure and flood protection, he's a fricking moron.

A surplus doesn't mean spend it. It means give it back to the people it was confiscated from.

No, the price of oil came back up hence more tax revenue for Louisiana

Second year in a row we see s surplus. Wasn't it 100 million last year?

It's obvious they fudge things to raise taxes more.

I think we need to pay off all the movie credits we owe in one big move, and stop the program.

Savings would be 200 million a year.

Yes, use the 300 million in surplus to buy what we owe.

i wonder if paying off tax credits would count as actual debt payments, maybe so

While that might be a sensible use, I believe it only applies to bond and pension debt, which since they earn interest, is probably the wiser move to pay off more quickly.

a compelling reminder, whether or not the movie credits would be a permissible payoff

I mean, I know the law is hard to follow for many of you, but... it says it right there in the article.

quote:

Under Louisiana's constitution, surplus dollars can only be spent on certain one-time expenses, like debt payments, construction work and rainy day fund deposits.

Maybe we should put it in the rainy day fund, so the next time a hurricane hits, we won't have to depend on the feds so much??? Since we hate fed spending so much??

It's hard to get hard numbers on exactly how much in credit is out there, but I want to say it's like over a billion, currently. With more being added every day.

I've often wondered if we should/could borrow a chunk of money and offer to pay off the credits at a discount. The savings in the coming years (from not having to redeem the credits down the road) could pay off the debt.

Another part of me things, at least the film credits are stable, so maybe we should focus on roads.

We are never going to get a legit tax cut as long as our tax system is so heavily influenced by sales and severance taxes, two things that swing wildly from year to year.
