The Advocate

quote:

The State Bond Commission barred two of the largest banks in the world from participating in efforts to fund some highway projects in Louisiana because of firearms policies instituted after recent mass shootings.

quote:

A few weeks after a gunman killed 17 people at Parkland, Florida’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Feb. 14, Citigroup announced it would no longer do business with retailers peddling high capacity magazines or selling guns to anyone who hasn’t passed a background check; or is under the age of 21, except those who have passed firearm hunter safety courses or are involved in the military or law enforcement.

quote:

Edwards’ legal advisor, Matthew Block, opposed the motion to exclude the banks arguing that state and federal constitutions restrict government actions, such as infringing on the 2nd amendment right to bear arms. The commission’s decision was aimed at punishing a private company’s decision.

So Louisiana residents; are you happy about this because it tells companies to back off from their liberal agenda or upset because there is some chance this could cost the state money?

I doubt it.

There are several other borrowing options.

You are probably right, but I think you have to at least acknowledge the risk.

And for the sake of argument, let's say it did cost a little bit more, would you be OK with it?

I agree. Those banks not lending to 2nd amendment businesses are stupid and petty.

Probably not.

But I'd have to weight the exact cost versus the potential infringement on 2nd amendment rights. IDK enough to make that evaluation with this particular situation.

One of Citibank's largest shareholder is Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal. That SOB funds all kinds of Democrat initiatives and was the primary benefactor to the McCain Institute.

Yeah, I think this will come back to bite Edwards. He ran as a fiscally conservative, pro-gun, pro-life Democrat.

At least he can still claim to be pro-life.

John Schroder is my Endymion float captain

I find it pretty funny - but also stupid to eliminate two underwriters which will reduce competitive tension in the bidding process and possibly result in higher fees / less money received by the state.

Stupid and petty on both ends. If the firearms manufacturers are turning a profit, why discriminate? If the bank has money and wants to help fund a project for the state, why should the state care whomever else they don't do business with?

it reeks of grandstanding, just like the policies themselves by Citigroup/BoA. punishing groups for unpopular political policies is definitely not that board's job, so i'd be pissed, if i thought it was likely to actually cost us.

i don't know, but i doubt it's more than a negligible additional cost, if any. now, it isn't even worth a negligible cost imo, if all we're getting for it is a headline for that moron landry. if it's more than a negligible cost, he & miguez should get reamed

The banks have to right to choose who they do business with and so does the State of LA. No issue with either. Capitalism is working.

I think this is sort of silly even though I really hate these types of kneejerk cause du jure corporate posturing that these banks pulled in reaction to that Florida shooting.

Like it matters. That money was never going to make it to the highways. It would have been shoved down deep pockets with some bullshite excuse. Another diversity meeting or something.

ETA: frick Citi. They should have been left to rot in ‘08. Thanks Obama, you bitch.
