Why do people up or downvote?

Honestly I think people around here honestly gauge how much truth there is in their opinions and it makes them not feel so alone when they say crazy stuff. Like when cptbengal makes some psycho thread and it gets a bunch of upvotes he feels vindicated and like he has some sort of support, when in reality he'd be laughed back to the basement. This board more than most need them to feel better about stupid ideas.

no idea.

Then I have no idea why people care about them.

Um. I don't wanna derail but really, I would agree with ANY policy that resulted in fewer Muslims moving here.

I'm not sure I can even conceive of one I'd oppose?

I guess it would be a bridge too far if the policy was "shoot them when they arrive".

LOL. You get so annoyed when people won't paly your game.

Sorry dude. I've been down the road with you where you post 5 paragraphs

I take the time to quote elements from every one of them and answer

Then, you respond to MAYBE one of the things. MAYBE.

Like I said. I'm proud of you.

At least you must have taken time to go luck up some shite to come at me with since the last time you tried to talk economics, your mouth melted.

It is continually telling that in all your responses not once have you been capable of addressing any point made. At least not one that wasn't intentionally mischaracterized first. Kinda makes one think that it is because you deep down know you've got nothing.

You would think for someone that was so convinced of his arguments legitimacy that he was running from thread to thread talking down to people that when push came to shove you would be able to offer up more than weak straw men, deflections, and childish ad hominems?

You wanted an answer to "Quick. Tell me why wired connections are, to use your words, "monopolies"?

Type it out and for frick's sake, if you can't answer your own question when you're done, I can't help you."

Well, you got your answer, but I increasingly think you never really wanted it. You just thought you did enough to silence the people you spam at and aren't actually prepared to defend your positions.

Its a great group-think promoting tool and I guess helps gauge how well a post hits on the emotional appeal level of a board. Since that is basically all anyone uses that system for.

Outside of that they are mostly trash.

Quantify "close". And quantify "severely lack". How many of the elements listed must be met to meet your definitions. Then I'll be happy to discuss the details. I find it more productive to get the parameters out of the way before diving into the details. Not that you would ever do this, but some of the less honest posters tend to change their argument midstream.

I'm not here to jump through the hoops of your endless questions and red herrings.

If you can't conceivably understand what "close" to the ideal characteristic means, I'm not spending my afternoon explaining it. That post more than clarified the points of contention I have, if you take issue, speak your case.

If you think the way I framed the ISP market is inaccurate, start by addressing the substance instead of this meandering question begging.

I do have a feeling we both know who at least one particular person down voting is right now.

Hint: His keyboard apparently only had three functioning letters when he created his screen name.

No...

You say internet isn’t a utility because it’s not a necessity. I say people can also technically live without electricity or gas.

You say a utility needs to be required in building codes. Therefore internet can’t be a utility. I say gas isn’t required as far as I know. So why is that a utility?

I’m sorry but I still don’t understand why internet can’t be considered a utility.

Not if they want to be considered as part of the functioning society...which is what utilities are all about. Passive forms of entertainment are not necessary for a functioning society.

The internet is used just as much for business as it is used for entertainment

So what? What is the point supposed to be to have it classified as a utility? As a business the service can be shown as an expense.

Or education.

An increasing percentage of elementary-high schools incorporate online components to their curriculum. You can't even expect to attend and function in major colleges without a laptop and reliable internet anymore.

When you graduate it is almost impossible to go through the job hiring process without access to the internet to correspond with emails and pass along documentation. Businesses are built around the reliability of internet access to maintain fast and prompt correspondence between employees, wherever they may be located at the moment.

Our societies reliance on the internet has only strengthened. And there is a certain irony to the people claiming the internet is not a pivotal component of their lives when they also are the sort of people that have 11,000 posts on an internet forum in a year. Seems like it is a pretty intricate component of their life to me.

That is actually a valid observation. Again..what is the point of the "utility" classification?

Not really. It's passive entertainment. Not at all necessary to my life in any way, shape or form.
