They really don't. Especially if they think getting some canned food flats and bottled water will sustain them.
I don't go into specifics on what my family and I have done to prepare ourselves for anything up to nuclear war, but I will disclose that we can filter at least 3 million gallons of water alone. These people relying on a few cases of Aquafina will be drinking their own piss within a week. They'll end up as food for their pets.

Buy some mylar bags and oxygen absorbers. Just a little bit of long grain white rice and a variety of beans into those bags every pay period adds up very quickly and is super cheap. I recommend to everyone I know personally, to have Al least enough to sustain your family without supplements for 18 months minimum. Rolled oats and semolina pasta are also relatively inexpensive and have a 20+ year shelf life when properly sealed and stored. Pure salt and honey have a shelf life of infinity.
It really is easy to do, just takes a little effort and knowledge. With a little more effort and knowledge, you can learn to can your own food and make things like pemmican that can last for decades.
