This wasn’t the first time that Dolloff went out looking to shoot a fascist.
That is a hypothesis, but I think grounded in some unfortunately close observations of murderers I have had. It takes a lot of resolve to shoot someone. And there’s usually dry runs where resolve wanes and the wannabe murderers backs out.
When my neighbor was killed by one of his wife’s boyfriends, it came out that the boyfriend had stalked the husband on several hunting trips before he eventually pulled the trigger. The wife goaded him after each stalking, questioning his resolve and dedication to her.
When one of my friend’s wife shot him, she had a couple of different plans that she failed to execute. An intruder breaking in during the night and shooting him was one. She lost her nerve in the night and eventually just shot him at breakfast and claimed he beat her.
Dolloff is nearing the end of the event. They were denied entry to the patriot protest inside. The protesters are leaving the area. In another 10 minutes, he won’t have any targets. So even if everything went wrong with the plan, this was it. He had probably steeled his resolve and said to himself, “Today is the day I shoot Nazi scum.” And when Keltner moves toward him, that’s it. He’s going to shoot. It doesn’t matter what Keltner does.
That’s admittedly a bunch of conjecture. But I think it’s likely fitting for most humans.
