The biggest blow was Ukraine SSR declaring independence. Russia lost close to 1/3 of its science, engineering and manufacturing.
Even more than that, they lost their Slav majority in the USSR. Without Ukraine the Russians were facing a USSR in which Muslims were the majority block. When Russia saw that they abandoned any idea of continuing the Soviet Union. That's why Putin hates Ukraine so much and wants those Slavs under his control. He needs that before he begins going after direct control of the Stans. Without Ukraine there is no Russian empire.

Sooo.. you can't defend why you think you have the right to speak on behalf of the Ukrainian people and throw away their democracy.
Again, even Zelensky backed down from this awful move.
Even Coeur thought Zelensky made a mistake.
Take the L man.

Any argument that Zelensky was justified in trying to take over the anti-corruption departments.
It's over now, even Zelensky backed off.
It was no good for the Ukrainian people, and they made their voices clear in protest.
Democracy is good for Ukraine.

How would you compare the value of Ukraine to present day Russia vs Afghanistan to the USSR?

Yes it is. Russia is bad for Ukraine.

I don’t see the big deal here. Ukraine isn’t doing anything that hasn’t been done before.
I’m against Russia. Sure it would be great if Ukraine held elections. But is that vital in defeating Russia? It’s not.
You sure seemed to think it was totally fine.
You can say up is down and left is right, but it was a big deal.
And now Zelensky made the right call, it's pretty simple.

I'm in the camp that we don't know anywhere enough to draw an opinion on this. I'd like to know a lot more details and who the protestors are.

The cost of the war and the morale of the Russian Army seem to be breaking that way, but that's just what I suspect. Meat waves are demoralizing to troops especially fighting to take someone else's homeland instead of defending their own.

USAID money was used for protests and the overthrow of the ukranian govt. But now that the people are pissed at all the corruption it caused.....we have to check out why?
All this death and destruction so some evil people could make a few bucks by fleecing the American people, and strike at Russia with impunity.....where is ole vic nuland these days? How's all that money working out for mccain?

Trump DoD has added another $150 million for maintenance and repair of Ukraine's M109 Howitzers. With the earlier sales of HAWK missiles and Bradley IFVs, this brings the total to $650 million.
It seems that the pro-Kyiv group in the WH (Rubio, Kellogg, Waltz) has Trump's ear now. The arms packages are growing.

Here's some better news. The Patriots that were supposed to take 8 to 10 months have already been delivered. Germany made the donation of in-hand stock to be replaced by the Patriots intended for Switzerland in the longer time frame.
Futher systems to be delivered as they are manufactured. Raytheon is expanding their businesses in Europe - with over 24,000 employees in the EU already.

Also this morning, Ukrainian drones reportedly targeted the Kotovsk Powder Plant—linked to Russian military production. The facility has been hit multiple times before.

Ukrainian anti-corruption agencies NABU and SAP say that new legislation submitted by Zelensky to parliament fully restores their independence, urge swift passage next week. This comes after a wave of protests triggered by parliament and Zelensky two days ago putting these agencies under the authority of the Attorney General, who is appointed by the president.

The last couple of days also demonstrated that Ukrainians can mobilize instantly when they feel their freedoms are under threat, and that the Ukrainian government, even in wartime, has to listen and take the public mood into account. Zelensky reversing course is an important precedent.

More information as to the basis of the bill passed concerning NABU and SAPO. Remember that a number of FSB agents were uncovered in both organizations. Should be illuminating to see what happens with Chief of Logistics, Oleksandr Bilous and his staff that were sidelined.

In May 2025, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) carried out large-scale searches at the National Guard command as part of a corruption investigation.
The homes of National Guard Commander Brigadier General Oleksandr Pivnenko, as well as several officers from the logistics and rear support departments, were also searched.
At a briefing with journalists on July 22, the head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), Vasyl Maliuk, said that following the searches, half of the National Guard laid down their weapons and refused to carry out their duties, while the other half threatened to march on Kyiv. He added that these events had a direct impact on the situation at the front.
“How can you just go to the commander of the National Guard, to a Hero of Ukraine, to a combat general like Pivnenko with a search warrant? Just come like that, when the issues are minor at best. Does he deserve that? And then it all spread across Telegram channels. Half of the National Guard laid down their weapons and refused to carry out tasks because they started doubting what kind of commander he is. And the other half wanted to go to Kyiv, so the Minister (of Internal Affairs) Klymenko spent a week visiting all the units to calm the situation down,” Maliuk said.
These events came to light following the recent raid by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) on the offices of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU), as well as the passage of a new law limiting the powers of NABU and SAPO – a move many have described as a return to the Yanukovych era.
As a result of the searches in May, six senior officials from the National Guard’s logistics department, including the chief of logistics, Oleksandr Bilous, were dismissed from their positions.

this is the issue i was talking about.. the anti corruption unit raided senior officers of the national guard. MOSTLY without warrants.. no charges filed no one arrested.... [Note: Neither NABU nor SAPO have powers of arrest.]
BUT due to the raids many senior officers were removed or quit meaning that the effectiveness of the national guard was degraded at the front.. FOR WHAT???
this is where the prosecutor general needs to have the authority to step in IF needed.. right now they dont
Chief of Logistics, Oleksandr Bilous -
quote:
this is not some guy, this was the head of the national guard.. due to the raid and how he was treated many in the national guard refused to follow orders at the time.. and here is the funny part, due to being a separate branch with no authority over them, but due to martial law they could NOT prosecute him even if they did find anything!!!!. right now they can arrest, then let out on bail and wait till the war is over to do anything unless he pleads guilty and pays a fine. ukraine does NOT need this shite.
quote:
now the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) has not charged him, has not cleared him..
and while he was promoted (again) has lost much of his staff due to the raids (no one charged). but while under "investigation" till the end of the war they can not carry out there duties that they had so many senior officers just quit.
the nabu has refused to say they raided the officers... they are separate and so dont have to.
quote:
now here is the question... what happens when they raid a corps HQ at the front in wartime???? that would shut down 6-12 brigades on the spot.
they have the power right now to do that and no one can stop them.... not even the president. and we KNOW that the FSB has ties with some of them.

Even though Russia is clearly mass-producing its Geran-2 drones, they are still essentially assembled by hand.
There is no proper rolling assembly line, no robotic automation. Russia never developed this type of industrial base, and isn’t building it now. This places tremendous strain on manpower, both within and beyond its defense sector, and remains highly inefficient.
quote:
To add two points after receiving some useful comments (and some weird ones):
1. Efficiency is a relative not an absolute term. You can design a process inefficient from an out- and throughput persepctive and still produce substantial numbers, as Russia evidently does. Germany during WWII is also a good example.
2. Given the low costs of labor and the specificities of the production line, greater automation may not necessarily be an attractive choice for Russia. In any case, I don't believe Russia feels the need to invest in this area, though they probably wouldn't mind easing the labor intensive nature of the production process, if they could.
This facility is Target #1 for Kyiv right now.

Anatoly Artamonov, head of the Russian Federation Council Committee on Budget and Financial Markets, has called for a revision of budget expenditures and the reallocation of 2 trillion rubles (~ $25.2 billion) - primarily toward "defense and security" (i.e., the war effort).
Artamonov believes this amount can be sourced by "optimizing inefficient spending, abandoning ineffective benefits, concessions for the construction of social facilities, and the maintenance of non-core assets such as football clubs with 'crazy salaries' and unprofitable sanatoriums." He suggests that the freed-up funds should be directed toward financing "high-tech industries, defense, and security".
So Artamonov believes he can find over $25 billion in social facilities, football clubs, sanatoriums and benefits? Half of whatever they do pull out of these sources will be stolen, which is an efficiency that will never be approached in Russia.
