Translated from Ukrainian
Today, the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum begins its work. This is the largest and most important event for Russia, where Putin delivers a speech every year about how Russia is defeating everyone and becoming stronger. This year, Rodney Mims Cook Jr., chairman of the Commission of Fine Arts at the administration of US President Donald Trump, also arrived at the forum. In particular, he has already managed to visit the Lenfilm film studio.
Due to such distinguished guests and the importance of the event itself, we couldn't ignore it—and urgently flew to Peter. But there's a nuance))
We really wanted to arrange an excursion for the guests to the cruiser "Moskva," but, unfortunately, we couldn't bring it in—so we had to sink two other ships right at the event venue.
I hope all the guests of SPIEF-2026 will breathe deeply with full lungs and enjoy the views.

Particularly notable is that the strike was carried out using guided strike drones controlled in real time 900 km from Ukraine.
It is ridiculous that Russia doesn't have some kind of counter drone system to intercept them. I could understand if the Ukrainians were hitting targets 9 or even 90 kms from the border, but 900 kms. Come on Russia that is just pathetic.

As all satellites have a level of encrypted communications, the answer as to whose satellite is involved will be difficult to determine. It's probably too James Bond-ish to suggest, but with the hackers they have in Kyiv, it would only be mildly surprising to find out they used a Russian satellite.

In any case, the only defense against this would be an EW block of the drones. Clearly the Russians are incapable of this. Maybe they are waiting for replacement vacuum tubes from a Chinese museum.

The Russians are too corrupt to fix this or any other problem not immediately concerning the Muscovites or people of St. Petersburg. I'm sure that those two groups of people didn't even know that the Ukrainians were attacking deep into Russia until they came under threat. It's still unclear if they care, or at least it was until the Kremlin starting pusing Max into their lives as a result of this war and their failures.
But until the Russians fix the inherent problems that led them down the road to this disaster in the first place - and that is not going to happen - the situation is going to get worse.

Interesting idea. Most prevailing winds move from west to east.
Does AI or GPS control after it is over Russia?

The Ukrainians are using someone's satellites but it is not the Russians. Hell the Russians do not even use their own GPS satellites. Have you forgotten that Russia is mounting Garmin's into their planes?

There is a ton of rural area that Russia could use to employ directed energy weapons to fry the computers in the drones before they reached Moscow or St Petersburg.

Agreed.

I am betting that the money for the defenses was stolen.

Half fantasy, half reality. At least they're talking openly about the reality.
quote:
Kremlin-linked oligarchs and ideologues presented future scenarios at SPIEF, describing occupation of Kyiv, Odesa, Kharkiv and other Ukrainian cities, EU collapse, US crisis and either Ukraine’s absorption or creation of a controlled buffer state as a “good” outcome by 2036.
Their “bad” scenario includes defeat, Ukraine in NATO, loss of influence and Russia’s fragmentation.

special appearance at the St Petersburg Economic Forum
This feels a little like the Russia/Ukraine war's Tet moment. No hiding from reality anymore for the Russians and their allies. When Ukraine can hit multiple targets in a location something like 700 miles from Ukraine during a high profile conference, it says that Russian air defense is now garbage. And Ukraine is only ramping up their drone and missile production.
It's definitely an existential threat for Putin. This will likely get very ugly since Putin has almost no good choices left.

I hate to be the one to say this since it involves hitting civilians but if you're fighting for your survival.....Why doesn't Ukraine send a drone now and then to some oligarch property to put more pressure on Putin? Make the people really feel it. Is Russia really gonna respond any worse than they have already? They are already hitting civilians constantly.

Ukraine has the high ground here. They don't purposely target civilians that have no effect on the Russian military.
Keep pounding legimate military and civilian infracture targets.

Or...maybe a little less James-Bondish...would be Starlink.

In June 2026, Cook led a delegation to an economic forum in Saint Petersburg, Russia. The American delegation—which included the far-right political commentator and conspiracy theorist Candace Owens and the US actor Steven Seagal, both of whom have voiced support for the Russian invasion of Ukraine—was the first in nearly a decade to participate in the forum.
We aren’t sending our best, folks.

Sounds more like Russia invited him...we didn't send him.
And Candace is just Candace...free trip to russia.

Owens will speak at a session on "balancing parenthood in a large family with a successful career," according to the official programme.
"I have been wanting to go to St Petersburg for a very, very long time just as a Christian in general just to see some of those cathedrals and churches," Owens said ahead of her trip.
She's just plain nuts. We didn't send her either.

Muh 2nd greatest army in the world
The Russian people need to pull a Ceausescu on Putin before he sends them all to die or get wounded at the front.

From yesterday. Let's see how long this closure lasts. I wonder if invitees Scott Ritter and Andrew Tate made it in.

The interest here is not the size of the claim but the mechanism established. Ukraine will continue to obtain liens in this manner until there is no foreign-held Russian wealth left. Through this means and claims on future Russian energy exports, Russia will pay for all of their crimes.
