Russian attacks kill 7, injure 31 in Ukraine over the past 24 hours

July 19, 2025 11:30 am

Russian strikes killed at least seven people and injured 31 others in multiple regions over the past 24 hours, Ukrainian regional authorities said on July 19.

Ukraine's Air Force said it shot down 185 drones and 23 missiles overnight after Russia launched a wave of 344 attack and decoy drones, 12 ballistic missiles, and 23 cruise missiles, primarily targeting front-line regions. One hundred and twenty-nine drones and seven missiles were jammed or lost, while five cruise missiles and 30 drones appeared to reach their targets.

The Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces said that Poland had scrambled fighter jets to guard its border regions as a result of Russia's attack on Ukraine.

In Donetsk Oblast, five people were killed in the Pokrovsk region and nine more wounded over the past day, Governor Vadym Filashkin reported.

In Odesa Oblast, a residential building caught fire following a drone attack, killing a woman and injuring at least six others, including a child, President Volodymyr Zelensky said.

"The enemy launched a massive attack on Odesa with strike drones. Despite the active work of our air defense forces, there is damage to civilian infrastructure," Odesa Oblast Governor Oleh Kiper first said at approximately 1:01 a.m. local time in a Telegram post.

In Kherson Oblast, one person was killed and 12 others injured in widespread drone and artillery attacks across dozens of settlements, including Kherson city, Governor Oleksandr Prokudin said. Russian forces damaged a high-rise building, nine private houses, a local fire department building, a garage, and private cars.

In Zaporizhzhia Oblast, a 64-year-old man was killed in drone and artillery attacks across 18 settlements, Governor Ivan Fedorov said. The government received reports of damage to apartments, private houses, garages, cars and infrastructure facilities.

In Sumy Oblast, three civilians were injured in an attack using missiles, glide bombs, and drones, the local authorities reported. Several thousand families were left without electricity, President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a post on Telegram on the morning of July 19 following the attacks.

In Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, a 57-year-old man was injured in a drone and missile attack on Nikipol, while fires broke out in Pavlohrad after the city came under severe missile attack, Governor Serhii Lysak said.

Separately, a 51-year-old man who was injured earlier in the week in an attack on July 14 died of his injuries, Lysak added.

"A hellish night and morning for Pavlograd," Lysak wrote. "The most massive attack on the city. Explosion after explosion. Russian terrorists struck with missiles and drones."

No casualties were reported in Kharkiv Oblast, though damage was reported to in several regions, including to homes, railway infrastructure, a pipeline, and the power grid, Governor Oleh Syniehubov said.

Its extremely easy, they weren't in NATO, so they were forced to make repeated trades to support themselves.
Sweden is having a huge immigration problem though. Budgetary and socially.

Believe me, everyone in the US DoD will be closely watching what the Ukrainians do to modify and employ these tanks.

No tanks were designed with drones in mind. Ukraine has been innovative so it will be instructive to see what they do. Cope cages and electronic warfare, or perhaps a few defensive AI drones to ward off drone attacks...

A video on Ukraine repulsing a Russian attack noted that one Russian tank took dozens of drones to destroy it.

Exactly. Also, it's complicated. But very interesting. The Russian economy today will be providing data for post-grad econ degrees for decades to come. Ranks up there with Schacht's reparations shell game during the Weimar Republic or the Bank of Japan's murder of the post-war Japanese middle class. But we digress.

Other than the normal factors of un- and underemployment and 30 to 40% of your educated young urban working people having fled the country three years ago, there are many 'uniquely Russian' factors that are confusing to Westerners. Here's a sampling -

The official interest rate plus transfer costs and taxes are a high hurdle in any economy, but more so in one that is actively losing a war. As it is true that buying a residence is buying the future, in Russia today the future is not something anyone wants. Plus, talk of coming lower interest rates - and the known reason behind these moves and their effect - are choking demand.

A bigger issue is mortgage liquidity, the mortgage/government banks simply don't have the funding for loans now without unrealistic collateral. The property alone is not close. Just as in the West, Russian banks do not want your residence. Especially in this market.

A (cash) down payment in excess of 45 - 55% of appraisal will get you an appointment with the loan officer. Then, it is suspected that such down payments will not be applied to the principle but to the war effort. Russians know this. They also know not to offer more down payment or God knows, make a full cash offer. This would only expose themselves as wealthy persons and result in treason charges the following week. That's not a joke.

So... why are we seeing continuing strong construction numbers in this environment? Simple, it's the same answer for any financial problem in Russia - corruption. All of those stolen and hidden Rubles have to go somewhere before inflation craters the currency.

So where else in Russia do you have a chance of retaining some value? Overseas stock markets, foreign currency, Deutsche bonds...? Uh... no. Russian crypto? Uh... hell no. And, as you mysteriously don't need bank funding for this construction, the financing is completely in-house, saving money and more importantly, preventing official reporting of your unexplained wealth. An interesting exercise would be to compare construction permits to construction loans. Hell, that's worth 100 dissertations by itself. Spoiler alert - my wild-assed guess here, but I think you will find very little correspondence.

NV reveals consequences of historic HUR cyberattack on Gazprom

July 19, 2025, 10:56 AM

A large-scale cyberattack by Ukraine’s military intelligence targeting Russia’s Gazprom could disrupt gas transport and supply across several regions, Ukrainian intelligence sources told NV on July 19.

A source in Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR) of the Ministry of Defense said Ukrainian cyber specialists achieved unprecedented damage to Gazprom’s network infrastructure.

The cyber operation destroyed records of contracts, schedules, tariffs, including data on gas and oil supplies, payments, taxes, Gazprom’s financial balances, licenses, and legal agreements.

Data from SCADA and GIS systems controlling pressure, flow rates, gas and oil balances, as well as information on Gazprom’s wells and pipelines, were also destroyed.

The source said the attack could significantly reduce budget revenues from what is Russia’s main source of funding for its military aggression against Ukraine.

“We can speak of the impossibility for the state corporation Gazprom to conclude new contracts, emergency operation of Gazprom systems, complications in gas transportation and supply to entire Russian regions, default on obligations, a major drop in Gazprom share value, destabilization of banks lending to Gazprom, and many other negative consequences for the aggressor country,” the source added.

According to the HUR source, Ukrainian cyber experts gained full access to all Gazprom information systems, allowing them to copy hundreds of terabytes of data. They accessed the internal analytical network and servers, and copied over 20,000 user profiles with electronic digital signatures, covering employees at all levels.

Databases of more than 390 Gazprom subsidiaries and branches were deleted, including Gazprom Teplo Energo, Gazprom Obl Energo, Gazprom Energosbyt, among others. The attackers also accessed systems supporting the technical operation of Gazprom’s infrastructure — including pipelines, valves, sensors — as well as auxiliary systems such as data protection, server control, and administration.

Data from automated control systems and 1C server clusters were covertly downloaded, along with all corporate files including contracts, orders, and instructions.

Using unique software, all data from Gazprom’s information systems stored on physical servers and cloud platforms — including backups — was deleted.

If this is true, it would be a massive win for Ukraine. Corroborating evidence should start to leak soon.

This could cripple Russia.

It's not just data but actual process controls which can affect compressors and pumps along with control valves and instrumentation. This could be much bigger than just the data

Stuxnet was probably the greatest hack in the history of cyber.

Its unlikely it could be pulled off by any country that isn't the USA plus Germany plus Israel plus the vendor of the hardware.

They burned zero days like it was kindling.

Russian attacks against Ukraine kill 7, injure at least 28 over past day

July 20, 2025 11:44 am

Russian attacks against Ukraine killed 7 people and injured at least 28 others over the past day, regional authorities said on July 20.

Ukrainian forces downed 18 out of the 57 drones, including Shahed-type attack drones and decoys, launched by Russia overnight, the Air Force reported.

Seven drones were intercepted by electronic warfare or disappeared from radars, according to the statement. Russia usually launches decoys alongside kamikadze drones to overwhelm Ukraine's air defense.

A Russian drone strike on a house injured two women aged 64 and 73 in the village of Prymorske in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, Governor Ivan Fedorov reported.

The Russian attack near Zaporizhzhia damaged seven houses, injuring one more woman, he added.

Three men aged 45, 59 and 73 were injured in a Russian attack on Kupiansk in Kharkiv Oblast, according to Governor Oleh Syniehubov. A 42-year-old man was injured in the village of Nechvolodivka while two women, aged 50 and 76, were injured in Izium.

Russian drones targeted the Svesa community in Sumy Oblast setting fire to three houses. The attack killed a 78-year-old woman, Governor Oleh Hryhorov said. Two more people were injured near the town of Shostka in the region.

Two people were killed, and five others injured in a Russian missile strike near Synelnykove in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, Governor Serhii Lysak reported.

People were killed in Kostiantynivka, Pokrovsk and Raiske in Donetsk Oblast, Governor Vadym Filashkin said. Six others suffered injuries in the region over the past day.

In Kherson Oblast, Russian forces targeted 34 settlements, including the regional center of Kherson. One person was killed, and six others, including a child, injured, Governor Oleksandr Prokudin reported.

According to the Harvard/Kennedy School study as of July:

Ukraine since 2022:

GDP has fallen over 20 percent
Population migrated out of country 20 percent
Drop in currency vs USD 27 percent
Transmission/Generation capacity reduced by 64 percent
Territory lost 19 percent
Budget deficit of over 20 percent of GDP

All of this while the west has propped them up with 100s of billions of dollars and technical support....to no avail.

zelensky needs to stop with the ignorant and outlandish proposals, get serious about negotiating and saving what is left of that country.

When an armed drone "disappears" where does it go? It falls somewhere. Do you think many of these "civilian strikes" might be some of these disappearing drones. Or do we think Russia is wasting drones dropping them on a car or a house, when they are obviously targeting the electrical grid and manufacturing/storage of weapons?
