Ukraine, Russia move towards potential peace deal, Bloomberg reports
quote:
KYIV, April 10 (Reuters) - Ukraine and Russia are moving towards a potential deal to end the war, Bloomberg News reported on Friday, citing the top aide to Ukrainian ?President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
Kyrylo Budanov, a former head of Ukraine's military intelligence, ?said that he saw progress towards a deal, but declined to say what a potential compromise on territory, a key stumbling block, would look like.
"No final decision has been made ?yet," he said, according to the report.
"But, in principle, everyone now clearly ?understands the limits of what is acceptable. That’s enormous progress."
"They all ?understand the war needs to end. That’s why they are negotiating,” Budanov ?said in an interview with Bloomberg on April 4. “I don’t think it will be ?long.”
Budanov was appointed head of Zelenskiy's office in January and has become a key Ukrainian negotiator during U.S.-brokered talks between Kyiv and Moscow.
The only tangible outcome from several rounds of talks ?this year was the exchange of prisoners of war. In the latest exchange ?in March, Ukraine and Russia swapped 500 POWs.
Another prisoner swap was possible ahead of the ?Orthodox ?Easter this weekend, Ukrainian officials said.

April 9 (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday announced a 32-hour ceasefire over a two-day period for Orthodox ?Easter and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Kyiv would abide by the measure.
We'll see if this holds for the whole 32 hours.

All of this sounds more promising than talks in the past. Hopefully it'll pan out.

European lawmakers call for rules to flush out the Russian spies among them
April 10, 2026 3:55 pm
A group of members of the European Parliament called for the urgent implementation of reforms to expose and limit espionage activities carried out by pro-Russian colleagues in an open letter made public on April 9.
The group of MEPs, led by Lithuanian liberal Petras Austrevicius, wrote that their request was motivated by news that the Hungarian government was "deliberately sharing confidential information obtained during EU Council meetings with the Putin regime."
A journalistic investigation, just days ahead of Hungary's April 12 national election, exposed that Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijarto coordinated with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov to update him on work to stall Ukraine's bid for EU membership.

Just in time for the Magyar Presidency, although the Odessa - Hungary Brody Pipeline will take precedence. The Brody Pipeline has a capacity of 180k bbls / day. This plus the Adria Pipeline from Croatia should cover their needs, however Fico in Slovakia will remain at the mercy of the Ukrainians.

Trump urges Hungarians to vote for Orbán
That's a blunder. Orban is in bed with Putin and those who replace him are not going to be happy with Trump.

This is the closest to having actual peace talks since the war began but it's still sus. With the Ukrainians lead in drone technology now openly dominating the battlefield - even the Russians state they are destroying their logistics and can't even get their soldiers to the front lines - and the threat of his allies in Hungary and the US threatening to lose power, Putin has got to be looking for options.
I'll be honest - it's hard to see this as real peace talks, at least in the long term. But Putin's got to stop the hemorrhaging somehow.

Maybe Witkoff will get his shirt back from the Russians?

Ex-CIA Director, Petraeus: Ukraine will be the most important military industrial complex in the free world.
This has a real chance of supplanting the US as the foremost military power in the world in the long term, and possibly faster.
With the Ukrainians racing ahead with these technological capabilities, and the US telling everyone else "All the old deals are off, you're on your own" this opens the door for the Ukrainians to move to the center of the military world and they will have the full backing of the EU and it's financial, political, geographic, and, yes, military capabilities.
Drone technology has the chance to completely replace all those huge stockpiles of Tanks, Bradleys, planes, etc. we are sitting on for nothing, and since Europe is looking for options the Ukrainians, the sons and the daughters of Soviet rocket scientists, are in the position to become the next Israel, a major military player surrounded by countries they will never trust again.
All of this while we are dicking around in Iran. We are flat out blowing it.

Are they actually producing "new" technology? I get that they can mass produce like no one else currently but what's new about them?
Sorry...but this silly little Iran thing is showing what some of the members of the EU have as far as military capabilities.

Put down the crack pipe. Let me know when they can actually project real power beyond their borders. Long-range bombers, carriers, ballistic missile subs, etc...
The only reason drones are so effective right now is that the anti-drone technologies haven't gained the upper hand. Technology will adapt to counter it.

The trouble with the logic that Ukraine is going to be this hub for the world on drones is that the second a big war breaks out your supply line is likely cut. Any large power needs to have drone infrastructure within their own borders and preferably some overlap. But like you said if a good counter is developed you're behind the eightball by the time all of that is finished.
