A very good article exposing the level of support the Chinese have been giving to both sides in this war.

Technological advances often reach both sides at roughly the same time. “We might see a new video transmitter on Russian drones, and we will understand immediately what company in China produced it,” says Oleksiy Babenko of Vyriy Drone, another large supplier to the Ukrainian military. “So we write to them. Of course, they say, ‘No, it’s not ours.’ But we ask again and they say, ‘OK, we can sell it to you too.’”
The same process works in reverse, he adds. “We ask them to produce something specific for us, and a week later they send the samples to Russia and then start to produce the same thing for them.”
quote:
Officially, China is neutral in the conflict and has banned exports of sensitive drone technology to both Russia and Ukraine. But western intelligence sources and Ukrainian policymakers charge that China’s government puts its thumb on the scale, even allowing better-funded Russian companies to buy entire production lines for relocation to Russia, despite western sanctions and Chinese export controls.
quote:
Ukraine is working to localise production of drones, but Yakovenko says [Ukraaine] remains dependent on China for about 85 per cent of the components that go into simple first-person view drones, which are piloted by remote operators assisted by onboard cameras and often used for kamikaze strikes.
quote:
China already makes 70-80 per cent of the world’s commercial drones and dominates production of critical elements such as speed controllers, sensors, cameras and propellers, according to analytics provider Drone Industry Insights.
That has made it a hidden fulcrum in the conflict. “It just puts into perspective how much control the Chinese actually have over the outcome of this war,” says Catarina Buchatskiy of the Snake Island Institute, a Kyiv-based military think-tank.
quote:
Buchatskiy also says that Russia “has been doing a lot of relocation of Chinese factories — they’re buying up the supply lines and then because they’ve always outbid, we are way behind the queue”.
quote:
Babenko at Vyriy Drone recalls receiving a phone call from a Chinese factory, in which he was told he could now buy any number of a type of motor that had previously been unavailable.
The reason, he was told, was that the Russians had opted to buy an entire production line instead of components. They no longer needed the motors that had been allocated to them.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has also stated that Chinese firms operate in Russia. “There are production lines on Russian territory where there are Chinese representatives.”
quote:
Other western officials say the Chinese state appeared to be directly helping Chinese sellers and a Russian buyer evade western sanctions and China’s export controls.
“We understand that a Chinese state-linked company was assisting a Russian defence company with circumventing Chinese government export controls, by using a central Asian country as a proxy end-user,” say the officials.
They did not disclose the identity of the state-linked company or the central Asian country. US Treasury sanctions from January refer to Kyrgyzstan-based Keremet Bank as the operator of the regional financial clearing platform. Keremet did not respond to a request for comment.

Ukraine to Gain Expanded Access to ICEYE Satellite Intelligence Data
The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine and Finnish company ICEYE have signed a new agreement that significantly expands the Ukrainian military’s access to high-resolution satellite imagery.
The agreement provides for continuous data acquisition from the world’s largest SAR satellite constellation, enabling faster and more precise decision-making.
With expanded access to ICEYE data, Ukrainian forces will be able to assess changes on the ground more quickly.
ICEYE operates the world’s largest constellation of SAR satellites, capable of providing images with a resolution of up to 16 centimeters.
The use of radar pulses allows data collection regardless of time of day or weather conditions—critical in Ukraine, where traditional optical sensors are often limited by cloud cover or smoke.
Ukrainian forces can monitor Russian troop movements in near real time thanks to these satellites.
ICEYE founder Rafal Modrzewski shared that the company’s technology enables 20 to 24 images of a single target per day, ensuring continuous monitoring and rapid detection of battlefield changes.

Putin belongs on the Board of terror.
What a joke. The guy’s caused hundreds of thousands of deaths and there is no end in sight.

Okay. The Russians have actually learned something from this war, and it only took them four years and a million lives to do it.
The Russians have started to concentrate some of their missiles and drones on Ukrainian power stations and not just apartment buildings. According to Kiev's mayor there is a humanitarian crisis developing in Kiev and that should drive a lot of people out of it, but in terms of 'breaking their will,' which is what the Russians are trying to do, I doubt seriously that will work.
They're just better about bringing the terror now:

Meanwhile, Ukraine seems to be working on a coherent strategy:

We will not tolerate any violation.
This morning, the French Navy boarded an oil tanker coming from Russia, subject to international sanctions and suspected of flying a false flag. The operation was conducted on the high seas in the Mediterranean, with the support of several of our allies.
It was carried out in strict compliance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. A judicial investigation has been opened.
The vessel has been diverted. We are determined to uphold international law and to ensure the effective enforcement of sanctions.
The activities of the “shadow fleet” contribute to financing the war of aggression against Ukraine.
Could this be the aforementioned 'Hyperion'? Probably not as the last update on that vessel saw it in the English Channel approaches. Not a good place under these new seizing policies.

Russian Intelligence in Turmoil as Spies Turn on Each Other Over Corruption and Power Abuse

In the context of fierce competition among Russian spies who were left without work after the mass expulsion of diplomats, reports began to emerge accusing more successful colleagues.
According to The Insider on January 21, this occurred after more than 700 Russian diplomats were declared persona non grata, most of whom were career spies. Due to the lack of available positions in other countries or state corporations, many of them were unable to find new employment.
quote:
These anonymous reports, sent to the head of Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) Sergey Naryshkin and to the presidential administration, reveal the scale of internal conflicts and corruption schemes among Russian spies.
quote:
One of the major scandals involved the publication of videos by Ukrainian intelligence in the spring of 2025, which showed hidden cameras installed around the SVR headquarters in Yasenevo and the SVR Academy in Mytishchi.
These videos, which were obtained by the Russian Volunteer Corps (RDK), not only captured the vehicles of SVR officers but also revealed internal documents and anonymous correspondence that exposed corruption practices within the SVR.

Plokhy names two triggers of imperial collapse.
The first is a crisis at the center, usually caused by war or economic exhaustion.
The second is the existence of regions with a strong national identity and a viable alternative future.

Actually genuinely happy for that soldier. The idea of drones hunting you is the stuff of nightmare fuel.
