This is the tanker hit by Ukrainian drones in the Med between Greece and Egypt last month. What was more important than the location of the strike was (unconfirmed so far) the death of Andrei Vladimirovich Averyanov, Major General of the GRU -

Unconfirmed info from RU and UA channels: In the Mediterranean Sea, Ukrainian Defense Forces attacked a tanker belonging to Russia's shadow fleet.
The ship was carrying officials from the Russian government, as well as GRU, responsible for drone espionage in Europe, sabotage, and sanctions evasion. Seven were injured and two were killed.
The liquidation of Andrei Vladimirovich Averyanov, Major General of the GRU, has been announced. Averyanov is responsible for shady dealings and espionage in EU countries, sabotage, and bombings in the EU. He conducted operations abroad on Putin's orders. He was also behind the bombing of Prigozhin's plane, the Novichok poisonings, and the Skripal poisonings.

Why were high ranking officials on a oil tanker?

They have served as drone platforms at least in the Baltic Sea. Why not?

It does seem like a stupid move, doesn't it?

Interesting that Russia's air defenses surrounding Madura were 100% ineffective even though Maduro was living in the middle of a military base.

Have to wonder if they were even operational or if the operators were told to stand down.

Numerous people have commented that it was an inside job. That statement about " the walls of a fortress cannot be considered impregnable as long as a donkey laden with gold can pass through them" seems to be at play here.

They were blind. No radar nothing to see to target. It's not like Ukraine has been unable to take them out with some ease and without the capability of the US military.

We'll see if this is how things play out.

hromadske: ‘Russia Wanted Ukraine in Exchange for Venezuela’ – Diplomat Fiona Hill testimony to Congress 2019
"The Russians [...] were signaling very strongly that they wanted to somehow make some very strange swap arrangement between Venezuela and Ukraine: [...] You want us out of your backyard [...]We have our own version of this. You're in our backyard in Ukraine. And we were getting that sent to us, kind of informally through channels. It was in the Russian press, various commentators,” says Fiona Hill at the U.S. Congress.

Except we have already threatened Columbia and Iran AND Russia milbloggers are already concerned that Maduro will spill the beans on Putin being neck deep in their cartel. Then there is China to consider

You expect them to say "we let the US take Venezuela so we could get Ukraine?"

Colombia has an election coming up in May and their current President is term-limited out. That would be an extra-stupid move.
Threatening Iran at this point is kind of pathetic, not tough...

Not really a stupid move, as it warns incoming.
As for Iran, his support has given the protestors and boost of moral. Not even close to pathetic. Iranians are jubilant that he has. There is talk of starting a petition to rename the Nobel Peace Prize to the Trump Peace Prize by actual Iranians.
So what is happening is that the circle of influence is tightening around Russia. Funny thing is the best Russian and Chinese expertise cannot do what US oil companies did in Venezuela. Their performance is piss poor at best.

Ukrainian drone maker Fire Point has localized 97% of engine production for its long-range FP-1/FP-2 drones. CTO Iryna Terekh says 80 of 82 parts are made in-house, from casting to final assembly.
Even mufflers are now local, slashing costs from €400 to €70. Output tops 200 drones per day. At $58,000, the FP-1 is far cheaper than Russia’s Shaheds. Ukraine still relies on imported microchips, but it's one step closer to tech independence.
