I believe it was special forces that flew in on helicopters to secure the Western approached to Pokrovsk.

We have strengthened the “Patriot” component of our Ukrainian air defense.

I thank Germany and personally Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz
@bundeskanzler
for this joint step to protect human lives from Russian terror. For some time, we have been preparing this reinforcement of our air defense, and now the agreements reached have been implemented. I thank everyone who contributed to this effort!

Or was it eastern, southern or northern approaches behind the lines to cut off supply routes?

I thought the Ukes landed special forces West of Pokrovsk to secure their GLOC.

But. I could be wrong.

More problems for Russia. Their infrastructure is getting hammered, as well.

The Russian people are in for a horrible winter. This isn't a joke - they are going to have problems getting a hold of food and fuel, meaning I can genuinely see starvation/freezing, possibly on a large-scale level, to death if the Russian winter isn't an especially light one.

A number of cities have central steam plants which pipes steam to homes for heat. This was the case in Eastern European cities pre WWII, such as Warsaw.

It makes sense considering the nature of Russians. What happens if they run out of fuel for their generators?

Why would cut cables and vandalize the generators?

Yeah, i just googled how their steam plants work and it's not looking good:

How do Russian Steam Plants Work

There's also the concern of what happens if the home isn't hooked up in the first place?

Off topic but the first I heard of central steam plants for cities is the founder of a boiler company in the US who owned the one for Warsaw. He, his wife and year old son escaped from the ghetto just before it was time to board trains to a concentration camp. He came to the US via Sweden (and Christians who risked their lives for them freedom) As an engineer for Monsanto, building sulfuric acid plants, he began rebuilding small boilers on the side to build it up into a top company. I knew his son (served two tours in Vietnam in the USMC) and still his grandson who lives in Miami (he likes fishing)

Same as John Helin, its founder who said there is no indication that the salient which has been already cut off and chopped up had budged.

I'll take it with a grain of salt

Nope, they have a central boiler with pipelines of steam distributed to households much like a natural gas distribution system in a US city.

So all the Ukrainians have to do is hit the central plate and half of Moscow is freezing to death.

Jesus the Russians fuked up with this invasion.

I don't know about Moscow, which is built on a swamp, but this is the case in a number of cities in eastern Siberia. A steam line ruptured in one a year or two ago and no one had heat

What really boggles my mind is that with Russia occupying the land on 3 sides of Pokrovsk, it's strategic importance as a transportation hub is completely gone. Why TF does Russia have to spend all of those lives taking it instead of going around it,

They're stealing the cables to re-sell at scrap dealers. This is a chronic problem in African and other Third World countries but is surprising to see in Rus... oh, wait.
