Russia concentrating on Pokrovsk, Ukraine counterattacking, Ukraine blowing up a key dam, and Belarus flying balloons into Lithuania.

quote:

Key Takeaways The Kremlin is intensifying its cognitive warfare effort aimed at coercing the United States to make decisions about the war in Ukraine that are favorable to Russia, including by blaming the United States for Russia’s own failure to meaningfully engage in negotiations.
Kremlin officials continued to reject Trump’s proposed ceasefire while reiterating Russia’s commitment to its original war aims.
Russia continued nuclear saber-rattling efforts in response to Trump’s dismissal of the Russian Burevestnik missile test.
Both Ukrainian and Russian forces continue to advance in the Pokrovsk direction, underscoring the fluid and interspersed nature of the frontline on this sector of the front. Ukrainian sources continue to note the porous nature of the front line and Russia’s reliance on infiltration missions within Pokrovsk.
The Russian military command is reportedly deprioritizing offensive operations in the Dobropillya tactical area to focus on Pokrovsk itself.
Ukrainian strikes on the Belgorod Reservoir dam (southeast of Belgorod City and 11 kilometers from the international border) along the Siverskyi Donets River are reportedly degrading Russian positions in the border areas northeast of Kharkiv City.
Balloons flying into Lithuania from Belarusian airspace are impeding operations at the Vilnius Airport.
Ukrainian forces recently advanced near Kupyansk, Pokrovsk, and Hulyaipole and in the Dobropillya tactical area. Russian forces recently advanced in northern Kharkiv Oblast and near Pokrovsk and Hulyaipole.

Ukraine war latest live: 'Russia has not achieved planned result' in Pokrovsk, Zelensky says

October 28, 2025 1:18 pm

Russia outnumbers Ukrainian troops eight-to-one in their offensive to capture the semi-surrounded city of Pokrovsk in eastern Donetsk Oblast, President Volodymyr Zelensky told journalists on Oct. 27.

"(Russian troops) have devoted such forces to the Pokrovsk (sector) that Ukraine cannot devote to one direction (of the front) — one to eight people," Zelensky told journalists in a briefing, Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne reported.

"Imagine how many Russian forces are there. But at the same time, they have not achieved the planned result."

After capturing Avdiivka, a long-time Ukrainian stronghold located over 40 kilometers (about 25 miles) southeast of Pokrovsk, in February 2024, Russian troops have gradually advanced toward Pokrovsk, once a key Ukrainian logistics hub tucked away in a relatively safe part of Donetsk Oblast.

Russian troops have surrounded Pokrovsk from three sides, leaving about a 15-kilometer (about nine miles) gap for the Ukrainian military to bring in troops and supplies, according to the Ukrainian open-source battlefield monitoring group DeepState.

Suckers are easy to sucker into believing that OLD technology is new and scary even if it isn't

I had this discussion with a friend who had worked for DoD as a nuclear astrophysicist back in the 60's and 70's but about nuke powered rockets for space travel. He said that the heat shielding to protect astronauts was the barrier to that type of use. It was 1950's technology for the US.

Aaaand here is evidence of Russia using its own drones to kill it's own soldiers who are attempting to surrender, the bastards.

Also, here is more video proof that the Russians are struggling, and in some cases losing, in places like Kupiansk:

In Russia's Ulyanovsk Oblast, Ukraine reportedly struck the NS-Oil refinery in the community of Novospasskoye. Russian Telegram channels, citing resident accounts, published photos and videos of a large blaze at the refinery.

Elsewhere in Russia, Ukraine reportedly struck the Stavrolen chemical plant in Stavropol Krai, Telegram channels reported. Purported videos of the plant appear to show a radiating fire emitting from the facility.

The plant, a subsidiary of Lukoil, serves as a major chemical producer, manufacturing products including benzene, polyethylene, and other petrochemical goods used to fuel Russia's war machine in Ukraine.

Another refinery hit, not a big one at all about 30,000 BPD with no finished products for consumer fuels market. Basically, it is a topping plant with MAYBE a vacuum unit. About the size of Pelican Refining on Old Town Road north of Lake Charles near LeBleu Settlement.

Also, this other, even smaller refinery. Plus, a petrochemical plant and another Crimean oil depot. It all adds up.

SSU drones strike Russian surface-to-air missile system worth $20 million, two oil depots, and radars in Crimea

29.10.2025 12:20

Last night, strike drones from the SSU's Special Operations Center “A” attacked Russian military and infrastructure facilities in temporarily occupied Crimea.

This was reported to Ukrinform by sources in the SSU.

"The Russians lost a Pantsir-S2 surface-to-air missile system worth about $20 million. It is one of the key elements of the enemy's air defense. The enemy also lost two radar stations. Each such destroyed or disabled air defense system significantly weakens the Russian Federation's defense in the Crimean sector," the agency's interlocutor noted.

In addition, Special Operations Center “A” drones struck an oil depot in the village of Hvardiiske, where fuel was stored. A large-scale fire broke out at the facility, sending up a huge plume of black smoke. The drone hit at the Komsomolskaya oil depot was also recorded.

“The SSU continues its systematic work to destroy the air defense systems covering Crimea and the oil depots that supply the enemy with fuel. Each such special operation reduces the military and logistical potential of the Russians. The explosions will continue,” the source said.

Strike drones hit two Russian oil facilities in occupied Crimea on 29 October morning, according to the monitoring Telegram channel Crimean Wind, which published videos from the scenes.

An explosion rocked the settlement of Hvardiiske around 6:26 a.m., igniting an oil depot belonging to LLC Kedr, Crimean Wind reports.

The company operates ATAN, the largest gas station network on the occupied peninsula with over 100 stations, along with multiple oil depots and a fleet of fuel tankers.

Reports of fire at an oil depot in occupied Simferopol began appearing around 7:00 a.m., with eyewitnesses filming multiple videos and photographs from the scene. Russian occupation authorities later stated that a Ukrainian drone strike ignited a petroleum products container within the city.

This month, Forbes Russia released its list of the 10 Russian companies with the largest amount of debt. And Gazprom was at the very top of that list. According to Forbes, as of June 30 of this year, Gazprom’s net financial debt was 5.79 trillion roubles, or $72.7 billion.

The invasion of Ukraine, and the subsequent sanctions and large-scale decline in European market access, have utterly devastated what had been the regime’s golden goose.

Why can't China replace Europe? The pipeline Putin opened in 2019 is the "Power of Siberia 1." According to experts (like Mikhail Krutikhin), it was unprofitable from the start. It runs from Eastern Siberia and was never connected to the gas meant for Europe. Gazprom is desperately trying to build "Power of Siberia 2" to redirect gas from Western Siberia to China.

And while Gazprom announced a "legally binding memorandum" in September, Beijing has not confirmed it. And all the crucial terms—price, financing, and volumes—remain unresolved and leave Gazprom with giant volumes of "stranded" gas.

Meanwhile, the company continues to pour money into extensive domestic gasification projects. This is a loss-making social burden imposed by the Kremlin, which only increases the company's debts.

Russia has the largest natural gas reserves in the world, and for years, Gazprom was the jewel in Putin’s crown, a center of power and an enormous source of revenue. But through mismanagement, cronyism and insistence on waging a bloody and pointless war, the regime has managed to turn the ‘pride of the nation’ into a liability.

The future availability of Siberian gas will be of critical importance to world energy price structure and security for the next five or six decades. Control of these reserves and associated logistics post-Russia will be a major US - China issue while this war winds down.

If they can get them into the country, Chinese generators are going to be very popular in Russia this winter.
