I think that the biggest impact from the oil sanctions may be with Hungary and Slovakia, because their governments have insisted on continuing to buy Russian energy in the face of EU sanctions.
Orban and Fico have publicly framed their Russian support in practical terms. But how can Putin keep his European allies without providing them with energy? What's the incentive now for Hungary and Slovakia to continue to fight with the rest of the EU at every turn to oppose Ukraine?

Putin's explicit goal at the beginning of this war was to demilitarize Ukraine. Instead, Russia is paying for Ukraine to become one of the strongest military powers in Europe.

Two Ukrainian TV journalists killed, one injured in Russian drone strike on Kramatorsk
October 23, 2025 1:12 pm
A photo shows the burned-out remains of a vehicle reportedly carrying Freedom TV journalist Olena Hramova and cameraman Yevhen Karmazin, who were killed in a Russian drone strike on Kramatorsk on Oct. 23. (Donetsk Oblast Governor Vadym Filashkin/Telegram)
Freedom TV journalist Olena Hramova and cameraman Yevhen Karmazin were killed in a Russian drone strike on Kramatorsk, Donetsk Oblast, on Oct. 23, regional governor Vadym Filashkin reported.
Later on Oct.23, Freedom TV confirmed in a statement that another member of the crew, special correspondent Oleksandr Kolychev, was injured in the attack and has been hospitalized.
Hramova, Karmazin, and Kolychev had reportedly been on assignment in the region when a Russian Lancet kamikaze drone struck the vehicle they were traveling in.
The deaths of Hramova and Karmazin mark another loss for Ukraine’s press community, which continues to report from front-line regions under constant threat of Russian attack.
The Freedom TV newsroom in Kyiv has been destroyed twice by Russian missile strikes in 2025.

Russian soldiers did have dress uniforms and bags of condoms because they were told that the "West" was controlling Ukraine and that Ukrainians would welcome them to throw off the Western yoke.

If the war continues Russia will achieve their goal, though it will be via population collapse in Ukraine.
The birth rate in Ukraine is around .9 and the death rate is the highest in the world at around 18 per 1,000 people. Russia's is at 13 per 1,000 for comparison, and their birth rate is around 1.4. Ours is about 1.8.

The last time the Slavic people pissed off the Mongols (in 1237) it didn't end well for Ivan, Natasha, Boris, et al.

Trump went dove last week and the Russians stiffed him. They didn't move an inch. The Russians adhered to the same demands that they have stated for two years. Trump's suggestion of halting on the current battle line fell on deaf ears. Putin's June 2024 demands haven't changed one bit.
Now Trump will gradually move back to the hawk position. The NATO secretary rushed to Washington after the phone call and failed mission by Z to get the next word in Trump's ear.
Back and forth. Back and forth.

EU Is Going to Have Their NATO War Against Russia – With or Without President Trump – And It Gets Worse
October 22, 2025 | Sundance
Let’s put the events of the last 72 hours into context. On Monday and Tuesday, Russian oil refineries in NATO countries Hungary and Romania suddenly, and simultaneously, have mysterious explosions and catastrophic fires {citation}}. On Wednesday, NATO head Mark Rutte comes to visit President Trump in the White House, and at the end of the day, the same Russian company, Lukoil, whose refinery exploded in Romania, suddenly becomes sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury {citation}.
These events are not disconnected.
President Trump then disputes a Wall Street Journal report {citation}, further saying he did not give approval, nor does he know where NATO long-range missiles are coming from that were launched from Ukraine into Russia {citation}. Alarmingly, both the Wall Street Journal and President Trump are seemingly correct.
President Trump did not give authorization; however, he did cede authority to NATO to make independent decisions about long-range missiles. The U.K. provided the British storm shadow missiles, and Ukraine launched them with NATO support for targeting deep into Russia. President Trump saying, “wherever they may come from,” is alarming in itself.
We all know that British PM Starmer, French President Macron, German Chancellor Merz and NATO Secretary Mark Rutte are all in alignment to push NATO into a direct conflict with Russia using the non-NATO state of Ukraine to do it. The frustrating part is not the obtuse deflection by President Trump – perhaps he really doesn’t know – but rather the alarming issue of questioning whether President Trump is getting accurate information from the U.S. intelligence apparatus to make sound decisions.
President Trump has abdicated the conflict decision-making to the NATO “coalition of the willing”, while the USA remains in NATO as a sideline observer. The European members of NATO want war with Russia. President Trump does not want war with Russia, yet remains tied to NATO as they push toward war with Russia.
This is not going to end well.
The U.S. Treasury sanctions against Russian energy companies is not going to cause Russian President Vladimir Putin to change his mind on his strategic objective of taking the Donbas region in Ukraine as a buffer zone against NATO encroachment.

It has long been an issue for presidents (and leaders of any country) that certain people or agencies can control what (if any) information a leader gets, which can end up with those information middleman being the ones actually making decisions by only presenting one or two good options.

Was there "pissing off" involved, or did the Kahn Dynasty just want to conquer Eastern Europe and the Holy Roman Empire?
