Putin's offer of a Russian law forbidding a future invasion of Ukraine is not credible because Russia has already twice broken previous binding international commitments not to invade and because Putin has shown that he can freely change Russian law as he desires.

He can? If he surrenders and tells the army to lay down their weapons, would they listen?

Exactly, he’s the aggressor. He’s the one who led his country into this disaster. The fact he can’t figure an off road out the mess he created is his problem. He is setting Russia back years.

It’s just wild to me that you’ll never see Trump say something like that to Putin. It’s hard to understand, especially from someone who has supported Trump a lot, and always thought of him as a “strong and tough guy”, especially on foreign policy.

Really Putin is the only one who can end the war almost immediately.

Really Europe could, they’ve spent more money on Russian energy than they have on Ukrainian aid.
But they won’t send one soldier to Ukraine, but want a U.S. security guarantee.

If Zelensky can get credible security guarantees and a path for ascension into the EU for Ukraine he would be a fool to turn it down.
That is the best he is going to get.
That is the best he is going to get.

Well there are ways several different parties could end it, for sure. But only Putin could end it 'immediately' outside of Ukraine just surrendering.
I think its pretty telling that the President is implying that Z is potentially an obstacle to peace though.

It’s illogical.
Trump’s actions are bizarre. Today will be interesting although I said the same about the Alaska meet. Trump is all over the place.

The first shots of the combat launch and tests of the Ukrainian cruise missile "Flamingo" have been announced.
It has a flight range of up to 3,000 km, a warhead of about 1,000 kg, and a speed of up to 950 km/h. It is resistant to EW systems and can be produced in large quantities.

Cool, someone else found Steve's channel. I was just coming in to post this. Just like with Russian Media Matters, I find hearing Russia in their own words is incredibly insightful.
Just to repeat the backstory Steve has been on the BBC Russia desk for decades and lives in Russia. Over the last few months he has read sections of Russian papers. It is almost always about the economy or the war as they surely dominate discussion there.
Though I think it is obvious when the captions are in red they are direct quotes when they are in black they are Steve's words. While it would usually be clear anyway I apprecite that attention to detail to prevent incorrect context.

Here's that 3000km -
All the Black Sea, Caspian Sea, White Sea, Aral Sea, 90% of the Mediterranian, the northern Persian Gulf (including Kharg Island) and 80% of Iran.
"Flamingo" hell, a better name is "From 6 to 12", cuz that's what it just did.
As soon as these telemetry tests are finished, the Ukrainians need to send the data to TACO with a nice note reading, "Take another two weeks. Please."

He must be good at staying away from windows in the upper floors of buildings.
The concept of foreign correspondents is interesting because in many countries they end up having highly slanted views of what is actually going on because of the contacts they make. In places like Russia, pro-Government types aren't going to talk to them (or give them any information that the government isn't saying themselves even if they do) so they end up getting more information from opposition types. That often leads to people in the country the reporter is from thinking the opposition is stronger and more numerous than it actually is because the source is biased, those voices are the only voices they are talking to, and those voices have an incentive for people to believe they are stronger than they actually are.
Steve seems to at least try to avoid that pitfall. Good journalism is hard to find.

One of the ten largest refineries in Russia at 300,000 bbls/day input. "Oil processing at the Volgograd refinery has been halted at least until the middle of September, the sources said."
Note that this is a Russian source and Russian timeframe. Alex, I'll take "Which September?" for $200.

VolSquatch is dead on here. Putin is the only person on Earth who could end this war now.
Europe and the US could send all the weapons they have - which I'm pretty much for - but Putin would still send his people to die in suicide runs. The new arms might at this point push the Russians back, but with Ukraine's limited manpower the war would go on at least a little longer.
It's Putin's war. He started it, he can end it at any time.

If tweet fails to load, click here. Z wore a suit and behaved himself in the Oval Office today. Trump liked his suit.
Good for him.
