Steve has been out of surgery for about an hour now. He is doing well but has a very long road to recovery. Physical therapy to walk could take up to a year.

Hope he makes a full recovery. Met him back in 2011. Really nice guy.

Can we get this updated with the Illinois laws?

Thanks for the update! Glad he's alive, terrible that he'll have to go through all of the pain and suffering. Along with those who love him!

OMG, thank you for sharing that! I have goosebumps and my hands are shaking. How that guy could hold that phone so steady for all that time is unbelievable. It seemed to go on forever. And why did someone have to shout 'shoot him' before they did? This video is incredible.

I realize its a gun shot and no telling what was hit. But he is out surgery and resting and goes from stable to critical condition. More damage than they thought?

I read that one of his main arteries was severed (femoral artery). It is the main transporter of oxygen to the lower limbs. And likely damage to the hip if the reports of where he was shot are correct. That poor man has a lot of recovery ahead of him and needs all of our prayers!

Not it wasn't. He was in the crossfire and got unlucky.

He is in stable condition per NPR Twitter.

What I'm still trying to understand, is why weren't they at work instead of on a baseball field on a workday.

They started practicing at 6:00 AM this morning for the 109 yr old Congressional Baseball game which is set up to fund dozens of charities in the area. Work doesn't begin for them officially until 8:00-8:30 AM

It was an early morning practice before work. I think the first shot was around 7 AM.
