That's what I was about to say. The F-15 platform hadn't lost a single jet to any conflict before that. And then one idiot shows up and downs three in a friendly fire incident.

I dunno why we are still flying f15s in a war theatre. Only guess is there is no realistic threat from Iran and purely offensive bombing.

The signature of the F18 probably showed up as a non-threat.
Probably the first time that the Kuwait pilot was in a real combat mode situation.

If the IFF system had them identified as "FRIEND" then they had no reason to think the Kuwaiti pilot would fire on them.
My confusion is the F/A 18 failure. They use IFF Mode 5 now which is a broad spectrum technology and the F-15's even in silent mode recognize the IFF radar signiture.
Something stinks about this IMHO

We just don't know what the situation was and what are the rules of engagement and if there things that added to the confusion.
First, I wouldn't rule out ill intent. You never know with these muslim sects.
Second, Were the F15's over friendly? Are they supposed to turn on transponders when over friendly? I doubt it.
Third, I would think AWACs would be used to confirm friendly/foe. was there a language barrier, was AWACs talking to Kuwaiti forces.
