Meet the Woman on a Mission to Make Atlanta's Wine Scene More Inclusive

Growing a wine business wasn't Steffini Bethea's biggest challenge—it was being a Black woman in the wine world.

quote:

A vacation to Malaga, Spain, changed Bethea's wine life forever. "I experienced Tempranillo, a black grape widely grown to make full-bodied red wines, and fell in love with its complex, savory notes."

quote:

"I've also assembled a staff of amazing, knowledgeable women that all happen to be Black," Bethea says proudly. She and her team meet with winemakers weekly and do about 75 tastes to select bottles to-go into the shop. Purple Corkscrew carries more than 350 labels from almost every wine region in the world, as well as a variety of Black-owned labels.

I like black jelly beans better than the other colors.
Is that allowed for a white man?

Wine snobs are the worst. A clearly racist wine snob? Nah, that's a hard pass, dogg.

This statement doesn't really jibe with the article, which makes it seem like she got up and running pretty easily, outside of the typical pitfalls anyone starting a business might face.

I mean, good for her, I guess, but I'm just not really seeing how her being black was really her "biggest challenge." If anything, it seems that was the principal thing that got her a full blown article in a national food and wine publication.

Also, imagine saying this...

"I've also assembled a staff of amazing, knowledgeable women that all happen to be White," Beth says proudly.

Do you really think people in inner city Chicago or Detroit care about this?

I’d like to hear concrete examples of how her being black in the wine world were impediments to her success.
