After seeing this, I asked a director at a very large, multi-national Japanese company if the term 'Jap' is considered offensive.

He replied that the term Japanese is proper, and 'Jap' is considered derogatory slang and is viewed as a term of disrespect.

It means Jewish American Princess. At least it did in Plano for all those Bar/Bat Mitzvahs I went to.

No.

Japanese calls their country Nippon.

No - Nip is short for "Nippon" which is what the Japanese call their own country in their own language (not "Japan"). So, Nip would be Japanese, along with Jap and Tojo (WWII was a great war for racist slurs, baws.)

As far as SE Asia, I think that Slope is more likely to be against Vietnamese, but probably is more general like asian or even chink.

Specific to Filipinos would be Flip or Noypi.

As someone who grew up in Kansas, the only derogatory term anyone used for Asians was "gooks". Jap, like I said before, was mostly the WW2 generation, I've never heard anyone outside of that generation use it as an insult, same as kraut, frog, wop, etc. The most prevalent Asian groups in Kansas are mostly Koreans, Vietnamese with a few from China and Thailand sprinkled in. There are very few Japanese immigrants, in fact I never met a single one. However, Lawrence, the most liberal, sky-screaming city in the state, does have a "sister city" in Japan. I believe they also have one in Germany. I don't know what the point of the arrangement is, it's not like Lawrence, KS is doing major trade deals with either country. My suspicion remains that the complainers were residents of Douglas County, where Lawrence and KU are located.

Don't they use "JAP" as the abbreviation for Japan for the onscreen scoreboards during broadcasts of the Olympics?

The issue arose last year when a motorist spotted a car with the Kansas plate in traffic near his home in Culver City, California, and took a photo of it. A Kansas woman of Japanese heritage contacted the state after seeing the picture and story in the newspaper put out by the Japanese American Citizens League.

Of course some California snowflake started this.
