That goes back to 1980 and the "Canadian Caper", when Canada used Canadian passports to get American diplomats that were hiding in their embassy. They closed their embassy after that.
They reopened the embassy '91, but closed it again in 2012, due to:
non-compliance with United Nations resolutions regarding its nuclear program, continuing threats to Israel, and fears for the safety of Canadian diplomats following attacks on the British embassy in Iran in violation of the Vienna Convention.

Not much oilfield action over there these days - maybe a few of them - but apparently 1% of Edmonton’s Iranian-Canadian population was on that flight.
Crazy stuff. Most were there visiting family. If that’s me I’d probably have my family visit here but I guess they don’t like the cold
