Most didn’t know about the genocide until it was too late. Hitler didn’t advocate for it publicly. Nazi officers and media told people the trains were taking the Jews away from Germany and that the camps were just labor camps for the war effort.

Ever heard "give them an inch, and they'll take it a mile"? Agreeing to have people removed for no logical reason was not some small thing by the German citizenry. Hitler had an irrational hatred of Jewish people, spewed it in front of massive crowds, and the people just went right along with it. What did they think was going to happen to those people once they were "removed"? And it wasn't just Jews who were affected. Anyone deemed unfit to contribute to society was subject to be executed at any time. When a man is willing to purge any part of society without due cause, no one should have felt safe.
I think Peterson might have been more accurate to say that everyone has to be willing to accept lies. They don't have to tell lies, or even believe in them. They just all have to be willing to do nothing about it.

This is the part that gets me. We have numerous examples of people being deplatformed from social media for telling the truth - Russian collusion, lab leak, etc. When the truth comes out there is no reform that takes place. As you say, they just move on to the next propaganda.

There was also the utter humiliation of WWI and resulting Treaty of Versailles. The German people are notoriously stubborn and proud. They were looking for a winner - no matter how gruesome that winner may be.

I read that section of Gulag Archipelago. He explains that people in the USSR know the truth. But they accept the lie because if you speak the truth you never know who is hearing it and you might get reported to the authorities.
You won't necessarily be arrested and tried for telling the truth. That would look bad. You are simply never heard from again.
