The problem is that Iran has discovered that they can shut down the Strait by simply making an explosion on an oil tanker or two. And then everyone else "self-closes" the strait out of fear of losing their cargo.
So, there is nothing to stop Iran from doing this again in the future.
Maybe Trump is considering this as a way to ensure that Iran doesnt do this in the future because they have "income" tied into keeping it open. and a "joint venture" would give the US some skin in the game to control the toll and the process?????.
I dont like this idea, but maybe this is why its even being considered,

Trump is not really controlling Israel or Iran right now.
I don’t like that this war is providing Iran with more control and influence as compared to before.
