My 14 year old son just finished reading an Ernest Gaines novel in high school, and "the word that shall not be uttered" appeared multiple times in it, which posed a problem since they read large swaths of it out loud in class. I asked him how they handled that, and he said anytime someone would get to it, they pause and then just skip over it.

Keep in mind, this class is probably 100% white kids (though I've never asked him) and they were reading the words written that someone else wrote (a black author I might add) and STILL they were too afraid to say the word out loud.

The idea that random assed white people are walking up to black people and calling them "nagger" to their faces like it's the 50's in the deep south is so laughable it's not even funny.
