Jewish - Religion or Race ?

this belongs on the politics board as its really a politically charged topic. with this recent Ye scandal, i've heard several media outlets strongly proclaim that being jewish is a religion and not a race.
if that's the case, can someone explain to me why jews test so highly on IQ tests? what is it about knowing the old testament that makes them score so highly whereas white and black christians, who use the same book, don't score as highly ?

On a standard form where boxes are checked for race Jewish is not one of the options listed.

It's very complicated for many people. "Jewish" is obviously, on the face of it a religion. People can convert to judaism with obviously little to no connection to the ancestry and those of the traditionally Jewish populations can convert to other religions or become agnostic or athiestic.
Having said that, Ashkenazi and Shephardi (among others) populations are simultaneously associated with the Jewish faith and certain genetic markers.
I hope my answer isn't too nuanced for this subject.

If you ask the Israeli Ambassador sent to any country he or she will be adamant that they are a RACE.
Otherwise their idea of nationhood (which gives them the right to have Israel) would be gone. It would just be a religious hang out place.
Also surely you have head the term "The Jewish People".
And "The Italian People", "The French People".
No-one says "The Episcopalian People" or the "Methodist People".

There is not a Jewish “race,” but definitely a distinct ethnicity. Two, in fact. Ashkenazic (European) and Sephardic (Oriental). There is also a Jewish religion, which overlaps about 80-90% with ethnicity.
On the environmental side, any group that highly-values intelligence and education tends to have a higher mean score.
On the genetic side, Sephardim do not test higher, but Ashkenazi do. One theory is that this arises from a sort of “selective breeding” arising from 1000 years of European pogroms and isolation.

This is probably the best explanation. I would say “ethnicity” rather than “race” though.
You can be a Jew and not religious. You can be a Gentile (non-Jew) who practices Judaism.
If your mother is an ethnic Jew, that qualifies you as being a Jew regardless of how you live your life. If you are a Jew who worships Jesus, you are a “Messianic Jew.”

That is all very interesting, but how does it address the question of “race versus religion?“
