Even with good intentions the federal government is incapable of doing anything well. Quite literally - there is nothing the federal government is effective and efficient at, and nearly every "problem" it addresses ends up worse. This is why no matter the cause or "existential threat", the smart American will want the federal government to do absolutely nothing about it.
House the homeless, teach kids how to read, help seniors make ends meet, address a scary scary virus - doesn't matter what super awesome things fedgov could do for us, reality is we are far better off with it doing nothing.
The only exception is national defense, and that's only because there are no local (or personal) options to fedgov.
