I don't think people are Conservative over issues...issues change...I think they are Conservative over a gut feeling that doesn't change. Big Picture.
Compared to liberals who are reactionary emotional people who want to fight every small meaningless battle over words or deeds.
Actions speak louder than words to Conservatives compared to Liberals.
There's nothing more Conservatives could have done to help the Conservative cause than liberals have done by being total loons and over-the-top reactionaries to everything.

Furthermore, I honestly felt more personal freedom living in Europe than I did here. So where the left wants to use government not only to make everything legal, but also to make certain actions "special" and "protected", the right is using government in place of shame because that's the only defense against poor life choices at this point.
I do believe, at the core, both believe in freedom, but neither truly understands how to offer society freedom, while encouraging efficient and good decisions. And I'm sorry, the reality is there are good choices and bad choices. Efficient choices and inefficient choices. Neither party, at this point, wants to truly believe this. Hence, a murky idea of freedom is left behind. The left wants to protect bad choices. The right wants to enforce good choices.

I think where the left gets really off base is with all the identity politics nonsense. Diversity for the sake of diversity, transgender acceptance, gender fluidity, whitey is the devil....these are topics that don't resonate with a lot of Americans including a lot of liberals and a lot of minorities.
Do you think the majority of African Americans are gung ho about transgender rights?

The right just wants order in the form of laws, abiding by those laws...sometimes the law doesn't matter if it's one way or another, just simply abide by them...
Take the selling of lucies...dumb fricking law...but 1. Don't break it until it's changed 2. Don't get rich with the meatheads that tell you to stop.

ETA:
Basically #1 is the core issue. If your first thought on issue is we need more government intervention then you are a liberal, if not then you are a conservative. The rest is all window dressing.

It's one of those things that's referenced briefly, but never really talked about. We get into these pointless battles of "You don't believe in freedom!", each side saying it to the other, without really digging into why it's only a problem now. The idea of "freedom" being a battleground for the left and right is a modern concept, because we've lost sight. That was maybe the one thing, 50-60 years ago, that wasn't up for debate. We all generally agreed. We don't anymore.
