Trump can't do it
Congressional Republicans won't do it. Bet.

But Trump haters keep saying he is all about protecting the rich, we didn't get tax cuts from the first Trump tax cut either.

What is the difference between a tariff and a tax? Nothing. Either way, you have to pay to run the government. If they eliminate federal taxes, there will be tariff loopholes for the elite, but none for the common people.

I think he’s been on record wanting it eliminated

I support it but I am realistic. We need to find 3-5 trillion a year to run this bloated government

We’d have to institute a large sales tax and, while much more fair, it would be punitive to too many people to win any sort of support from the middle to lower income folks

He's not just hinting at it. He's straight up said he wants to do it. The people he's putting in place are on board, too.

He's creating a parallel economy that has brought in half a trillion in external revenue already.

Your premise assumes that all federal spending is necessary.

It is not.

I'm afraid this is incorrect, as well. The necessary amount for a national retail sales tax is approximately the same part of the current cost of goods at retail that is comprised of embedded corporate income taxes. Those taxes are passed along the distribution chain from manufacturer to wholesaler to distributor to retailer and ultimately paid by the consumer.

There is no way Congress would pass it, especially the Dems. They think it's their right to tax people as much as possible.

The difference between tax and tariff is consumer choice.

We need more people contributing to the tax base, not fewer.

Already got too many riding in the wagon and not enough pulling, and been that way for too long.

Maybe the tariffs are a way to broaden the base. But if we're going this route, why give everyone $200k and under a free ride on income taxes but making someone who earns $300k have to fork over a portion of their income?

I wouldn't put it past him to find a way either, that way will likely be unconstitutional, or illegal or both. It will frick things up that's for sure.

Everyone would pay under a tariff system, it’s not difficult

Yes because then it is a consumption task and people would have more money to invest in domestic companies and but the products.

The only exceptions would be for things we don’t make or grow in the USA.

Great. But we've seen floated the idea of anyone making over $200k still being subject to Federal Income Tax.

Are we going to keep that group having to pay income taxes? What are FICA taxes in all of this?

You do realize currently roughly 50% of the American population pays no income tax? Under a tariff system, everyone would pay it

No taxes on Social Security

Didn't happen...we still have to pay tax on a refund of a tax we paid in over 45 years and counting (for me personally). I am still not happy about that.
