Is there any legit justification for it taking so long to count votes in Arizona?

Maricopa County is the 4th largest county in the country.

A record number of people dropped off mail in ballots on or shortly before election day in Arizona.

Those ballots have to have signature verifications done on them before they can be counted.

Stealing, just like 2020. If they steal this, it will confirm Trump was right (as were the rest of us). This is why they've been ramping up the "election denier" language the past few months.

And this takes a week, in your tiny little mind? Florida is the third largest state in the country, they had theirs done by dinnertime.

When the cash man goes to the section 8 hood to pay for the blank ballots he often finds that some of his clients are in jail and won't be out on probation till tomorrow.

Clients could have left the ballots with a friend who would exchange them for the cash. But these days you can't even trust your friends with your money. It's a damn shame what society has come to these days.

By election day morning, Florida is basically already done processing and verifying mail-in ballots. They don't allow them to be dropped off on election day all over the state like Arizona does.

Maricopa County had nearly 300k mail-in ballots received on election day.

You don’t see one hint of the frickery that this allows? It’s as if you want the uncertainty.

The whiners act as if processing these ballots is just a matter of running them thru a tabulator machine. It isn't.

Each ballot must first be compared to voter rolls, to prevent double-voting. Then signature comparisons. Any discrepancies must be resolved. Be generous and say that a given election worker can process a ballot in five minutes, that is 12/hour or roughly 100 per day.

If there are a total of 300,000 ballots, it would take 3,000 man-days to process them. To complete the process in one day, you would need 3,000 volunteers, and they are not working with anywhere NEAR that number.

How many volunteers are counting? 200? That is 15 days. 500 volunteers? Still a solid six days of counting.

JFC, where did Mick say anything of the sort.

OP: Why is this taking so long?
Mick: The reasons are as follows ...
Motorboat: Why do you WANT the votes counted this way?????

Bingo. I'm sure certain ballots are getting a lot more "verification" than others.

Personally, I think that all early votes should just be tabulated as they arrive, so that they are ready to report when the polls have closed, but I do understand the possibility that results would be leaked.

As to in-person early votes, this is not a problem. All the verification is done before the ballot is cast. All that remains is to run the ballot thru the tabulator machine. That can be completed post haste after the polls close.

As to early ballots that are returned to the registrar either by mail or by drop-off, no verification as been done, so the post-polls work includes BOTH verification of hundreds of thousands of ballots AND running them thru the tabulator.

I suppose that we COULD authorize realtime verification as the ballots arrive throughout the early voting period and save only tabulation until Election Day, but even then we would have the problem that many of these ballots will not ARRIVE until Election Day or a few days before. During that time, election workers are busy getting things ready and then watching the polling places. They really do not have the TIME to early-verify these ballots.

So, we are left with two options. Delayed completion of the count OR major changes to election law consisting of some combination of early verification/tabulation and/or reduction in the availability of early-voting in any way other than in-person.

But it really seems that we just have to choose between (a) instant gratification on Election Night and (b) ease and flexibility in casting our ballots.

it's not just counting ballots. It's checking signatures and matching them to the envelopes and voter roll sign in sheet, checking and verifying addresses, etc. all by multiple people. It's not as simple as just "counting votes". Each vote takes 5 to 10 minutes to go through the process.

Those ballots, the ones mail-in ballots that were dropped off at voting locations are not the issues!

In fact as of this 7:19 this morning, they haven't even started counting those votes!

So why is it taking so long if those votes haven't even been touched at this point?

That is essentially what it boils down to. In Florida, there are less options/time for casting mail ballots so you end up knowing the results much faster.

(sigh) Those ballots have been going through the signature verification process. After that, they are tabulated.
