Is there a personal element to what is going on with China?

Sure, it’s something that should have been done years ago. But I can’t help thinking that this is partially in response to what China did with Covid. It was the 1 and only reason Trump lost in 2020. It opened up the gates for massive fraud. I believe Trump wants to crush them, and it’s not only what needs to be done, but something he’s going to enjoy doing.

I think he is just showing them that he'll follow through on his threats with actions. Something they have basically never faced from the US since WW2.
They'll come to the table eventually. Neither of us benefit from a protracted trade war.

China better get personal and quick....they will be in big trouble if they don't get to the table!

Even the people running the country under Biden kept the sanctions against China in place. The Chinese believe they can play the long with us, and we will never push back. Trump is settling the table for a sustained push back.

They aren't entirely wrong in that regard. They can play in terms of decades or longer on policy.
We vacillate wildly every 4-8 years. They clearly understand that anything and everything coming out of a US administration is temporary. Of course, the Congress could enact something with more staying power, but Congress fricking sucks and hasn't fulfilled its responsibilities in half a century or more.

I dont think Trump has much of a "personal" vendetta against China - at least not like he does with Iran (who wanted to kill him)
China is the beast of burden to the US. China crushed the US working and middle class. Today its the only country that could even be considered a peer in terms of power.
Trump, unlike Biden, is taking the bull by the horns. China became a power because the US invested in them and traded with them, they will go back to being a country of substance rice farmers when we severe ties

What makes you say that? We benefit greatly. We do t need China for a fricking thing ever! We need to learn to think like Americans again instead of like you. Do yall just regurgitate this bullshite because someone on tv said it?!
frick China!

I think he’s trying to goad China into acting before they’re ready. Right now, we have the economic, political, and military advantage. 20 more years of Dems and RINOs, it’s a different story.
Edit: that’s was evident by Bessent’s remarks. China showed their hand, and it was a bad one.

Well, we're either going to end up with $5,000 dollar iPhones with no one able to afford them or sweatshops with suicide nets to keep prices like we currently have, there's really not much in-between.
Personally I don't mind just letting China make the shite.

We do not and cannot manufacture everything we buy from China. Fighting a trade war with the second largest economy in the world will indeed eventually harm American businesses and consumers. We aren't invincible and we are not 100% self sufficient. No country on earth is, or even capable of it.
Everyone benefits from free, open, and fair trade. That is the goal.

If you operate under the assumption that anyone other than end consumers are ultimately paying the tariff fees, I suppose. The businesses and importers, etc., are just going to recoup their costs with higher fees and prices downstream.

They may very well be the puppet masters of our enemy within.

India already makes 20% of iPhones. Apple will shift more production to them or another no/low tariff country for the iPhones that they ship to the US.

You think we have free, open and fair trade with the rest of the world?

They have free and open trade in our country. We get regulated and fined abroad, and compete against state backed entities

That is assuming that there is not an alternative. There are. Asian countries are chomping at the bit to gain market share.
