I’m pretty direct. Issues that I care about involve education and (currently) mass incarceration. Those are things I post most often about. The “news” that I consume is mostly research about those two topics.

I often disagree with the ideas you advocate for, but I respect that you, unlike many posters here, recognize that there is in fact a huge problem in these areas, and that the status quo does not work.

I respect your opinions regarding charter schools. I think Covid really messed with a lot of things not allowing for a true apples to apples comparison. I would like to see another 5 years, at least, of data before I am willing to concede that they were worse for the system as a whole than doing nothing, which we both already know wasn’t working before.

As for mass-incarceration, my disagreement isn’t that we should have MORE people locked up, but that our justice system’s priorities are out of wack. How many years you get for white collar crime, drug distribution, and illegal weapons possession charges is way too high while the sentences for rape, assault with a deadly weapon, armed robbery, and attempted murder are often way too low. I think we also have contrary opinions on bail. I am of the belief that eliminating cash bail has been a disaster, and that we need higher bail for defendants accused of violent crimes because police are tired of arresting them only for them to make cheap or non-existent bail, never show up at their court date, and get arrested again after committing yet another horrific crime.

It’s important to point out that there isn’t a uniform system for implementing charter schools. Them not working in one district doesn’t necessarily mean they won’t work anywhere.

I’ve yet to see school vouchers improve education in any district so far. My mind is pretty made up that vouchers are a money grab, but I’m happy to keep an open mind about them if there’s evidence to the contrary.

In terms of incarceration - the way we do it is all wrong here. It’s just another corporate money grab at this point with almost zero emphasis on rehabilitation.

End the war on drugs, problem solved.

I'm for more incarceration of violent criminals and repeat property criminals.

Your schools will not get fixed under the current scheme. We spend too much money for the results we get.

I have actually visited the trade school at Angola and spoken to inmates who are getting their college degrees there. I wouldn’t say that there is no focus on rehabilitation. I just don’t think what we’re doing is working well enough, and I think we’re routinely releasing violent felons who really shouldn’t be getting released as soon as they are.

Angola is 100% doing a better job than most other incarcerated facilities in the state. It’s come such a long way, and that’s impressive. DOC and Burl Cain deserve credit for that.

There’s so much corruption involved in the prison industrial complex that really hurts some offenders. I work closely with formerly incarcerated people and hearing their stories piqued my interest in the system.

I’m actually speaking at a conference next week about education in jails and prisons and the educational opportunities available in reentry. I plan on posting some of my talking pints just to spread awareness about some of the corruption and backwards policies.

HOWEVER, I work pretty closely with several people in DOC at the state level and I’ve seriously never met a more compassionate, professional and dedicated group of people. It really shocked me at first. I wasn’t expecting that.

This anti-war board has gone full-throat neocon, hook, line and sinker.

There is nothing "neo-con" whatsoever about believing that Israel is justified in doing whatever it feels is necessary in response to the Hamas attacks.

People are idiots or they aren’t paying attention. Pick one.

Stop taking cues from mass media or government officials trying to tell you what to think. See with your own eyes what happened and try living in the real world for a change.

I think that graphic in the OP says a lot more about the below 50 crowd than it says about those of us above 50.

Yep, its not their fault, theyre just technicians.

The bloated size and scope of govt is the issue here. Different levels of govt feel so pressured and empowered to fight the drug war over anything else that every traffic stop is a potential bust to them.

I never felt like I would randomly get pulled over in the 80s, but after the 90s any slight violation gets you pulled over to check for various things, or states of impairment.

Until the drug war is resolved things will never change. Poor people will be attracted to the trade, and will be incarcerated.

The "Israelis" of today and since 1948 are not in any way connected to the biblically described jewish. They are instead from the steppes in Asia and migrated to Eastern Europe. Whether or not they ever converted to Judaism is an open question.

Go to Israel today - the current Israelis have virtually none of the genetics of Biblical Judeans

If this were true, wouldn't all arguments cease as the crowd gets older? Strangely I've not found that to be the case. Gettig older means yor certainty in your beliefs solidifies. It's no guarantee those beliefs are the truth, just that your experience tells you they are.

On matters I have a strong opinion about, while open to hearing other perspectives, they rarely change my opinion. So, for my... my beliefs are truths and how I live my life. Others can be wrong if they choose. Lol

OK - I gotcha - and I agree.

Politics is no place for a rigid evangelist - gotta take that devotion to a different place. Certainly you can live up to you own personal religious standards, but if you want to do a secular job you have to allow all others to do the same as long as they are within the law and regular ethics.

You cannot 'govern' by strict biblical rules = especially when you put you own interpretation on their application.

I am glad Johnson is religious - and I think he will be a great SotH
