Press conferences have had signers as long as I can remember.

They have had this for a long time at major public announcements. Deaf people exist.

Probably required by law, but seems like they should have subtitles instead.

There are probably lots of people, especially elderly, who have lost their hearing and never learned sign language.

I don't get it.

Every modern TV has closed caption capability.

Have you ever used that capability. It's horrible for live events.

The sign language union must be strong.
I loved this guy they had step in to sign during hurricane Irma and accidentally signed pizza, and bear hug

Closed captioning is a user/viewer decision, and is generally terrible and way behind on live dialogue especially.

Based on some of the outrageous facial expressions, I’m not sure that they are communicating what the speaker is really saying.

Not sure why ASL is still being performed at these pressers, every TV made in the last 10-15 years has CC built into the set.
