Someone actually downvoted this. That is insane.

You'd be surprised how many people love them some big government. They are usually two types. They are on the dole or work for it.

Genuine question, why does the IRS have so many people working for it?

There is over 150 million taxpayers. It takes people to process the millions of returns, handle questions, calls, disputes (where's my refund? Move payments applied to the wrong period, etc.).

I know the 88k Biden wanted were to audit and target people, but is the rest of the IRS process/operations that manual?

This is mostly to remain efficient and plan for the coming retirements of the boomers.

If you don't collect taxes you can't hope to reduce the deficit and or retire any of the national debt. There is just no way around increasing taxes along with spending cuts to close the deficit.

100%. The main purpose of the internal revenue code aint to collect revenue

The argument has always been.....a flat tax puts an unfair burden on the poor........then why do you tax fuel????????????

It’s a BS argument. There are ways to structure to not be regressive.

I have little hope for a flat tax or even greatly simplified tax code.
Too many people make a living off taxes,it’s an industry unto its self.
Tax attorneys,CPA’s H& R Block,etc.

And how many did Musk layoff from Twitter/X? And there were cries that the whole thing would crash, if not overnight, in a few weeks.

And, here we are, X is humming right along.

Heck, if you are a W2 employee, and/or collect SS, make money from stocks, divs and/or interest, the IRS already has all your information. Most people don't itemize with the higher standard deduction, so many of us shouldn't even need to do our taxes, let the govt computer run them.

No returns, no questions, no entry errors, people aren't wasting time/$ on tax software or prep. Other countries do this.

Well your beef is with Intuit and the lobbyist not the IRS. The IRS has created a program for this exact scenario and Intuit and H&R Block lobbied against it. Look up IRS Direct File for more information.

Hold on....you want to defund and abolish the IRS but have the "govt computer run them"? You realize that you are contradicting yourself, correct?

Sure. Noone is arguing against this but that is only one piece of the tax compliance pie.

You are ignoring the partnerships, s corporations, C corporations, foreign filers, and expats.

The IRS has very little information directly reported to them about these entities' activities. The IRS cannot prepare a return for these entities as they have no visibility into their expenses or full banking activity.

I am a former CPA, and do my own taxes. I use Turbo Tax every year, and they pretty much do this with the flags while you are completing your taxes. They do this because they offer the service of representing you if you were to be audited, if you pay for that service, which I do. So, using an organization like Turbo Tax lowers the risk of being audited, significantly.

This, except for being any sort of CPA. I've used Turbo Tax for somewhere over 20 years now and never had a problem despite going from a simple 1040 to now needing K-1's, DIVs, filing for multiple states, etc. We're seeing how much money the federal government wastes and loses, so it's fricking ridiculous that they haven't been able to fund a full-service consumer portal for people to file their taxes directly.

As many others have stated in many other threads, a lot of this would not be needed if they just simplified the tax code down to "n% of your total income, regardless of source". That combined with cost savings from shutting down waste, fraud and abuse and we could see the debt starting to get paid down almost overnight.

But then the envious and greedy couldn't complain about "multi-millionaires and billionaires" (which has graduated from "millionaires and billionaires", which itself grew from "millionaires") "not paying their fair share".

You are forgetting that the tax code is not primarily about revenue collection but rather about influence peddling and social engineering.

You don't think it sucks to lose your job? I never have, but I cannot imagine it being a pleasant situation.
