This one is probably the most spot on one. Not sure if an Edge is a must though but fair enough.

To be more specific, an Edge, opposite Young that fits the scheme and has the athletic ability to contain outside runs and chase down QB’s on rollouts. Fill that position along with NT with difference makers and I’m confident Staley can work things out with some 3rd tier FA’s and mid-late round picks to fill out the defensive depth chart.

Id almost rather throw tons of money on guards than draft them. Every other position we can draft. Spend money on guards

We’ve got to go all in on Guards in FA. When’s the last time we drafted a decent OG? Carl Nicks in 2008? We’ve got too small of a window of Shough on a rookie contract to bank on draft picks to fill out the OL.

Sadly, because of Mickey’s restructuring, we won’t save cap space by trading/cutting him until the 2027 season.

Musts:
-OG’s to give Shough a pocket to work with
-Edge that fits this scheme
-Difference maker at NT
-Gamebreaking WR

Needs:
-CB
-receiving+blocking TE
-durable starting RB

Wants:
-ILB
-DB depth
-DE depth
RB- Rico Dowdle
OG- Joel Bitonio
OG- Wyatt Teller

Give Staley his choice of an ILB, and trade Werner for a pick.

Go into the Draft knowing Shough will be protected and have a running game.

Pick BPA at WR, Edge, and NT with the first 3 Draft picks.

No. Give Shough a chance to end the season on a 5 game winning streak and win ROTY.

Also consider it’s a good selling point for Free Agents to join a hot team, with a solid, young QB.

Was it him or peat that got whooped leading to Brees hand being fricked up that season?

That one was Peat, it was before Ruiz was on the team.

Ruiz is responsible for Brees’ broken ribs and collapsed lung in 2020 though:

Nice gesture from him, considering he’s only on a 2nd round rookie contract. Ruiz should’ve gotten coal though.

These trades remind me a lot of the type of moves the Saints made in the 2006 offseason, where a culture reset was badly needed.

Small trade downs for starter upgrades (Hollis Thomas, Jeff Faine), low value pick trades or for starters/solid contributors (Shanle), trading Stallworth on a contract year (4th rounder+ starting MLB in Simoneau).

The Draft gets most of the attention, but these are the types of moves (along with finding a franchise QB) that make it possible for a team to go from 4th to 1st in a division in one season.
He was one of the first guys talking up Shough prior to the Draft.

Riddick on Shough

He also has some good things to say about Riley and Sanker, towards the end.

It was all Payton

Not all. The player Payton was set on in the 1st round of the 2020 draft (Ruiz draft) was Henry Riggs, who is in jail for vehicular manslaughter.

Imagine if we hold onto the picks this year and have a similar type of draft, resulting in 5-6 impact players/immediate contributors. Combine it with a decent FA, and it’ll really set the stage to make some playoff runs while Shough is still on his rookie contract.

IMO, it is worth extending him and Demario because of the dead money we have to pay them anyway. Pay Cam something like 2 year / 12 million and push is cap hit out over that timeframe. It is the same as Johnson a Young were. You have them on the books for 12 million regardless.

I’ve got no problem with signing both to reasonable 1-2 year deals. This team will likely be even younger overall next season, and they’ll all benefit from the veteran leadership of two potential HoF’ers.

I had tickets in section 316 and one of the ticket reps was handing out seat upgrades on the 3rd level. Gave us tickets in section 123.

Have you looked at the fa class for guards? Theres only one really good one and he’s been out most of the year. Everyone else decent is in their mid 30’s and not worth it. Gonna have to draft one this year.

Decent would be a huge upgrade over what we’re currently working with. This draft is also very weak in OG (unless converting OT’s to OG),so we’ll likely need to sign one then draft one. Ideally the rookie has OG/C versatility to provide injury insurance for McCoy.
