Ireland's referendum Friday represented more than a vote on whether to end the country's strict abortion ban. It was a battle for the very soul of a traditionally conservative Roman Catholic nation that has seen a wave of liberalization in recent years.

An Irish Times exit poll released Friday night projected a landslide victory for those who want to loosen abortion laws, but official results are not expected until Saturday afternoon.

The country's leaders support a "yes," an outcome that would repeal a 1983 constitutional amendment requiring authorities to treat a fetus and its mother as equals under the law. They called it a once-in-a-generation opportunity to liberalize some of Europe's strictest abortion rules.

quote:

The vote also is a key indicator of Ireland's trajectory, three years after the country voted to allow same-sex marriages and a year after its first openly gay prime minister took office.

I know there was a thread from a few days ago pondering the question on whether or not the Supreme Court would revisit abortion in the US under the question of whether it can be considered murder if a man slips his pregnant wife or girlfriend a pill to lead to termination of a pregnancy. I thought this was interesting that it looks like Ireland is likely rescinding current rights conferred upon a fetus under the present law.

quote:

The referendum will decide whether the eighth amendment of the constitution is repealed or stays in place.

The amendment requires authorities to equally protect the right to life of a mother and that of a fetus, from the moment of conception. That effectively bans all abortions in Ireland, except in cases when the woman's life is at risk. Having an illegal abortion is punishable by up to 14 years in prison, and several thousand Irish women travel each year to get abortions in neighboring Britain.

If citizens vote in favor of repeal, new abortion laws will then be discussed in parliament. The government proposes that terminations be allowed during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Later abortions would be allowed in special cases.

Prime Minister Leo Varadkar, a doctor, voted in favor of repeal.

The same body they didn't bother exercising control over in the weeks before. Who exercises control over the child's body?

Every time i see one of the European countries have one of these referendums its reminds me how much of a shite show such a vote would be in the United States. On any topic really.

There’s any number of reasons women get an abortion, and there’s certainly different viewpoints on when it actually becomes a "child". This is t going to make anyone have an abortion, it just gives them the option if they feel they need it. There’s not going to be any minds changed on this so we’ll have to agree to disagree.

Ireland's bishops should all resign. Complete cowardice during the whole referendum.

De Valera is rolling over in his grave.

Look, if you can’t randomly crush the skull or dissect a living human being while it is alive, can you really call yourself a civilized nation ?

Why, and what good would that do? It’s rather likely that devout practicing Catholics aren’t the ones voting for the repeal

If you leftists are supportive of this, then I'm sure you will be happy to support it here in the states as well.

Very disappointing if it passes. There aren't enough imprecatory psalms for all of the evil in the world.

Given the Catholic church's sordid history in Ireland...I'm sure no one would care if they all resigned.

I was reading up on this today

What's interesting about the situation is that Ireland doesn't have a vote by mail system. Many Irish citizens are living in other countries. Apparently a pretty large group of people from around the world budgeted overseas flights to come to vote on the issue.

There’s any number of reasons women get an abortion,

Looking at the statistics, whether from the CDC, pro-life sources, and the Guttmacher Institute, militantly pro-abortion, there is little difference in the reasons cited for having an abortion.
quote:

In 2004, the Guttmacher Institute anonymously surveyed 1,209 post-abortive women from nine different abortion clinics across the country. Of the women surveyed, 957 provided a main reason for having an abortion. This table lists each reason and the percentage of respondents who chose it. Percentage Reason
<0.5% Victim of rape
3% Fetal health problems
4% Physical health problems
4% Would interfere with education or career
7% Not mature enough to raise a child
8% Don't want to be single mother
19% Done having children
23% Can't afford a baby
25% Not ready for a child
6% Other
The state of Florida records a reason for every abortion that occurs within its borders each year. In 2015, there were 71,740 abortions in Florida. This table lists each reason and the percentage of abortions that occurred because of it.
Percentage Reason
.001% The pregnancy resulted from an incestuous relationship
.065% The woman's life was endangered by the pregnancy .085% The woman was raped
.288% The woman's physical health was threatened by the pregnancy .294% The woman's psychological health was threatened by the pregnancy
.666% There was a serious fetal abnormality
6.268% The woman aborted for social or economic reasons
92.330% No reason (elective)

These percentages have been stable since 1973 irrespective of the organizations compiling the statistics.

It is apparent that abortion, peddled and branded as a critical component of women's health, has become and continues to be a primary method of birth control for women whose reasons are, 90% of the time, completely self-centered having little or nothing to do with their health.

The numbers of abortions have stabilized at approximately 1,000,000 per year with the larger proportion of those performed on minority women.

So, from 1973 the abortion mills, under protection of law, for selfish convenience, have murdered over 55,000,000 human babies and spare baby parts for profit.

And they have even managed to use this ghastly procedure as a tool of social engineering to reduce or minimize minority births.

This is what the Irish apparently want for themselves. Child sacrifice on an industrial scale.

You should care. Aren't many of these left:

Whether you believe in Jesus or not, once Christianity, the Roman Catholic church, its ideals and principles are destroyed, we are all fricked.

They are winning right now.

The country is owned by the Roman Catholic Church.

This vote doesn't have a chance in hell.
