Pretty rough move. I assume he'll spin it as providing more options for Florida residents / protecting jobs for Florida car salespeople, but is a grotesque government overreach.

It's just like how Tucker said he would ban self driving trucks because the economic impact of having tens of thousands of adult men unemployed in a short span would be devastating. This is just really buying time for Florida to hopefully start drawing down that industry, because there are thousands of car salesmen who will lose their livelihoods over the next decade.

1. I don't like this.

2. If you like tariffs you should love this. It's the exact same principle.

And that may be the intent. I don't know what sort of agreement dealerships have with manufacturers; I know the OEMs can make a lot of demands about showrooms, etc. There may not have been any protections for an OEM setting up next door and sinking a dealership that just built a 5 million dollar showroom because the OEM made them. If it's a possibility clearly the dealers were exposed in some way.

The one thing is the OEMs certainly aren't forcing them to open up dealerships. If anything the dealership owners are fighting to be able to to build those multi million dollar franchise locations because the owners make so much money.

Presumably the future will have those dealerships being showrooms facilitating test drives with some hourly product experts and service stations. I don't see this law lasting in perpetuity unless neighboring states all pass it as well. If I were a Florida consumer I'd just order a car to Georgia, Alabama, or Mississippi and save the pain.

The internet has just about reduced new car buying to this model anyway. Last 2 new cars I've bought I took one test drive at a local dealer, told them if they were competitive they'd get my business because I like money staying local, then I went online and got bids. Ended up buying one in New Orleans because the local dealer was way too high, the second in Atlanta just because inventory was limited and the local guy didn't have the model I wanted. No haggling, no idiotic quad sheets, no "let me check with my manager".

I don’t see what good this does but it was passed almost unanimously through the Florida legislature. DeSantis wouldn’t have been able to stop it

I see this being said by the Chris Christie’s of the world but don’t see them explain it in detail. How is he not?

You see this being said by people who like tariffs, huge government budgets and populism. They’re desperately trying to make populists the new conservatives. If one or two strikes is enough to cross someone off the conservative roster, Trump was kicked off a long time ago.

Trump is not a capitalist. He's a mercantilist.

Trumpism is moderate left 1960s Democrat politics.

Me either. And yet he's still going to be a better and more effective president than Trump.

Lockdown anti business Ron most likely will not be. He will be better than Biden, but Biden is the worst president.

Better than this Democrat.

I'm still waiting for the realization from this crowd that Trumps populism is nothing but rebranded Democrat socialism.

What a horrible excuse. Ron had the chance to be a leader yet chose to fall in line. Classic GOPe

Do you want a rehash of Trumps 4 years in office? Really? Cause the deals and caves and budgets, hand shakes and heads of dept's he appointed are a lot worse than this one deal. But lets go if you want too

So which is it?

Either Ron was ineffective and too distracted to get ahead of this bill prior to voting

Or he was OK with this bill so he didn't bother to get ahead of it prior to voting
