it's a good idea to explicitly state that you're being sarcastic, or better yet avoid using sarcasm to make a point. Political discourse has become so extreme, not here specifically, but everywhere, that it's very hard to tell when someone on social media is being sarcastic unless you know their posting history. The South Park writer's thread is an example. Judging from the responses, some people thought the the OP was being serious. I thought he/she was being sarcastic but couldn't be sure.

The absence of a [sarc] tag is your indicator.

Sarcasm is useful to force a point home. When done well, it slides invisibly through the outer defenses straight to the heart of the matter.

And yes, you will need to explain that you are being sarcastic more times than not if you actually care.

If my point scores, I’m generally satisfied and don’t care. If it doesn’t register, then I’m forced to explain my sarcasm and the point I’m trying to make.

Or use your brain, context and reading comprehension to figure it out.

LOL

There were only a couple of comments lambasting the OP in that thread. That's the way it works around here.

I love sarcasm and appreciate that it is valued here as well -- though you are correct, and at times it is not seen for what it is.

Don't through the baby out with the bathwater though.

So look at the South Park writer's thread, the votes and the comments. If the OP was being sarcastic, he failed to get his point across.

I strongly considered that, but decided not to assume anything.

I rely upon other posters knowing my perspective from my posting history and being able to discern my seriousness (or lack thereof). Usually works, but not always.

This board is full of people who don't read or watch completely what people post before posting themselves. Quite a few on this board are not the brightest.

To be honest it's amusing to me to see the comments of those who don't get it.

Go to Reddit. You can add 'sarcasm' flair to your message in some forums. That should appease you.
