Polls fwiw

quote:

As Congress continues its habit of deficit spending, voters overwhelmingly prefer a balanced federal budget, but most have lost hope that it will happen in their lifetime.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 67% of Likely U.S. Voters believe it would be good for the economy if the federal budget was balanced. Only nine percent (9%) say it would be bad for the economy instead, while 12% say a balanced budget would have no impact. Another 12% are not sure. These findings are barely changed from 2021

quote:

Even though no major politician has made balancing the budget a key issue, the American people are rapidly shifting toward a belief that the budget should be balanced. A recent poll we sponsored at The American Majority Project, conducted by Mclaughlin & Associates, reported that 70% of Americans favor a constitutional amendment to balance the budget. Only 13% oppose it.

Despite other political divides, Americans overwhelmingly agree that the government shouldn’t run up the debt.

A 2023 poll revealed that 4 in 5 Americans support a constitutional amendment requiring the federal government to balance its budget within 10 years. Americans for Prosperity

Kurt Couchman

Ensuring Congress can respond to crises: Any amendment must include provisions for emergencies, such as recessions, wars, or pandemics. Emergency spending thresholds, like the two-thirds vote requirement in some proposals, can ensure flexibility while maintaining fiscal discipline.
Having a realistic timeline: Achieving the savings needed to reach a balanced budget will take time to phase in. A 10-year path to balance after ratification is most realistic.
A principled vision: The language of an amendment should rely on broad constitutional principles, ensuring the details can adapt to a changing society over time.

Trump should have a televised debate
Each side gets 15 minutes
Followed by a non binding National referedum

Can't hurt. Any other ideas out there?

f the Mandatory spending, what percentage of that is waste/Fraud?

That was incorporated in the napkin math

Add in the $236B in waste (which give a double benefit to the reduction as it accounts for lots of waste in the non-discretionary and half military budgets)

They have repeatedly said SS won’t be cut.. just cleaned of fraud and waste.

Why that is controversial to anyone is utterly insane to me?

Because the Trump admin is lying to you like they do every single day.

“You know Social Security is wrong, you know Medicare and Medicaid is wrong, so he's going to cut one trillion,” Lutnick added. “Get rid of all these tax scams that hammer against Americans and we’re gonna raise a trillion dollars in revenue, and our objective, under Donald Trump, is to balance this budget.”

Republicans will lose the next generation of elections. They'll be lucky to hold onto the reddest of red states

They are talking about increasing the amount being paid out to people of retirement age.
I don't think that will affect the way voters vote, in the way you are thinking it will.

And they are talking about making sure that illegals, and dead people are no longer getting paid.
Again, something red voters will approve of.

They’re not going to cut SS for anyone that should be getting it.

Now, for all of those suspect numbers and people each one needs to be investigated and if it’s fraud whoever has been receiving the money needs to get charged.

For the last sixty-five years dems have been lying and saying the Repubs will cut medicare and social security. What will bnkrupt both are fradulent cliams which the dems have done nothing about. The only people who will be cut are those who do not legally qualify to receive those benefits and most of those are illegal aliens.

The boomers are the last generation expected to get social security. And they are almost gone. The next generations would rather handle the money themselves.
Anyone with a brain would rather handle the money themselves.

No one will be given that opportunity. SS is not going away as long as the US is deep in debt. Your post implies retirees are the beneficiaries of SS. They are not. Uncle Sam is the sole beneficiary. SS is an obligatory loan supplied by US workers to Uncle Sam, on Uncle Sam's terms. He determines both how much he will borrow, the timeframe he will borrow it, and the ROI he will provide.

Your obligatory contributions to SS will increase, not decrease.

If anything SS pay out will increase and SS payments will decrease because all the fraud and wasted pay outs to the “dead”/illegals will be eradicated.

Only thing being cut from SS is the fraud.

Why are you sky screaming over doing away with rampant fraud?
