This city has one thing going for it: LSU. The city has zero else in terms of arts or entertainment. The entire calling card for this god-forsaken city is LSU. It is the ONLY thing that brings fresh blood into this city.

I didn't go to LSU, but my wife did. That is how I ended up here. At the time, it was also a bit more happening than the other areas of the state.

This is a time when the value of a University degree is falling and the cost of the degree has skyrocketed. The cost to benefit ratio is approaching questionable already. Throw in this level of crime, who in their right mind would allow their kids to move here for school?

Any parent helping their HS kids choose a next-step will pull up the news for Baton Rouge and rule this place out. Random students getting killed coming home from a bar is a city killer.

I'm planning my exit as I sit here. I can't get out fast enough.

If LSU and the City-Parish didn't do anything serious to address this issue when a member of LSU's basketball team was murdered, they never will.

I get the concern. BR has terrible leadership, but LSU is not going to die. It’s the largest class in history. The locals may force their kids to go somewhere else but out of state applications and admissions continue to go up which means more tuition with the out of state fees.

Cracking down on the crime means admitting what the problem is. There is zero political incentive for them to do that.

Their largest class in history is due to the overwhelming increase in out-of-state applicants due to the extensive coverage LSU received due to the 2019 football season. Similar to what has happened at Alabama, but on a much smaller scale.

LSU administrators love that, because each student from out of state brings in a much larger tuition payment.

This is very shortsighted, however, as the proportion of those out-of-state students that will stay in Louisiana is far lower than in-state students, and the long-term health of our community and state will suffer for it.

My kids would have been third and fourth generation tigers, but it has been with mixed emotions that I have sent them all away for college. I would be very surprised if any of them came back despite growing up in Baton Rouge

My daughter is a senior in high school. I had her make a list of schools she was interested and then looked at the crime stats for each city or town they were in. I told her no way was she going to LSU.

It's just logical. And good parenting. What I don't think everyone has realized is the city is a 1 trick pony.

Friday there was a BR Biz Report (Daily Report) teaser for an article asking why BR can't attract the Creative Class. The power brokers in this city can't fathom how little those people care about LSU football. Literally the only thing this city can point to as "culture."

You can say the same thing about St. George. Yet the shortsightedness of political leadership would rather continue with the status quo and continue to watch people leave the parish.

You have people who are running things who don’t agree with you on what is good and bad. Let that sink in for a minute.

My son will not attend LSU. It breaks my heart to type that but that’s where we are.

Dumbass

I’m not saying Baton Rouge is in a great place right now but there is plenty of industry to support it without LSU and even without private industry it’s the friggin state capital.

LSU is going nowhere and the state capitol is going nowhere. Because of those things Baton Rouge’s will never completely fall off.

Also I could give two shits about the “artistic creative class”

As long as BR is the state Capitol, money (and therefore people) will flow in at a steady pace. That’s true with every state and national Capitol.

LSU is a huge economic driver, but it’s not the only game in town.

I'm a dumbass for pointing out that LSU is the sole driving factor to moving here? It is the only thing that brings in fresh young blood.

State capital means shite. It means it is where the politicians gather a few times a year. Frankfort, KY is a capital and that means nothing.

I didn't say LSU is going anywhere, but when parents stop sending their kids to this dangerous shithole, it's a world of hurt for BR. Look no further than the comments in here. My kids will not be going to LSU and that doesn't appear to be a unique opinion... in an LSU oriented board.

The Business Report article was about the creative class of entrepreneurs who tend to start tech companies etc. Much confusion about why those folks don't want to move here. I mean we're a state capitol for crying out loud! Also we have petro chemical plants and LSU football! They should be clamoring to move here.

That will never happen short of an actual revolution

Our entire culture is built around not simply avoiding the problem, not even denying there is a problem, but claiming the victims are the problem
