People naturally desire comfort and well-being, and it would take a TRUE threat to their well-being in order to motivate them to actually pick up a weapon and fight. Let's be honest, most people are perfectly happy as long as they have their TV, smart phone, and alcohol.
Our current economic situation is way too comfortable for wide-scale civil unrest. People may talk tough, but when they are forced to decide whether they are willing to fight and die for their "grievances" they'll quickly realize that their grievances aren't so bad after all.
It would take an economic collapse before anything started getting really serious.

you will not see a civil war. if something did happen it would be rioting in the cities.
full on Civil war would be cataclysmic, and would result in a great portion of the population dying not from fighting but starvation. with the cities becoming deserted.
in the 1860, we were still a mostly agrarian society, not we rely on the mid west to feed us. civil war would break the supply chains of food to market. also in the 1860 we didn't have electricity in most areas. now you lose power for 3 days and you lose all your food.
as the US goes so goes the rest of the world goes, as the worlds E-value will be decimated. Markets would implode,the US would not have food exports feeding hte world, and no one will have money to buy anything as currencies would be worthless.

Hypothetically speaking...
My first inclination as a Kentucky boy is to open the gun safe, and stand firm. Call my brother who hunts everything that moves, and see what happens. His whole family hunts and shoots, and so does mine. That's 8 people who are frequent shooters holding down the fort.
If it got too bad, I do have a safe room built into my home with 360 degree inside and out camera views if needed, that has enough water and rations for 3-months.
I am within an hour of Knob Creek Range in KY. It hosts the largest gun shoot event in N America each year, and is situated in the middle of the woods - only 26 minutes from Ft. Knox. I always thought this would be perhaps the "safest spot" I knew with all of the ex military, militia, and good ole boys that frequent the range.

I'll be in Vegas at the Westgate or Circa, betting on it live in-game, since La will be the last state in the country without legalized Sportsbetting..and since the La-Ms-Ala-Fla panhandle will be amongst the Leftists main target rich areas to attack.

After watching the debates lately I just never thought I would see the day when "tax the hell out of em" would be something that brought cheers. Do I really think we will go to war, no. Not a chance. But I dont dismiss you as a loon as quickly as I used to.

This civil war would not be sectional. But if that did happen as you suggest you would have to have massive population exchanges as they did following WWII.
These regions (Midwest Northeast South Southwest Pacific ) aren't homogeneous in their political views. Unless you are suggesting camps for the people that are of the "other".

I'm not saying I'm sure there will be a shooting war, but it certainly isn't out of the realm of possibility. Hell, anything could happen and it could start tomorrow. However, if it were to happen, I still think we are twenty or twenty-five years away from it. If the crazy left does get power and try their socialist experiment, I think it will at least take that long for the resentment against the system to boil up to a point where the people remember what America was and step in and do something about it.
Right now the most important thing we can do is make sure our little baws and bawettes are MAGA as hell. It'll be up to them to keep America America. Hopefully common sense prevails and some kind of great revelation occurs where the vast majority of the people realize how precarious our situation is.
