Less than 5000 people live in the county. It's rural and voted 85 percent for Trump if that gives you an indication what the population is like. Crime is basically zero. I don't get it, it feels like big government keeping an eye on us. Anybody else dealing with this bs?

Just being a pessimist here….

Somebody in an overpaid sister in law administrative position wrote a random grant application to some obscure branch of a government agency and it went through. The brother and husband to the sister in law will get the bid for installation.

These are always trade off discussions IMO.

You have a wholesome, crime-free community. Perhaps they want to double down on it and bolster that and ensure it stays that way. Which is a good approach.

On the local level, I think the liberty concerns are largely academic and in practice the "let's make our town completely inhospitable to people with bad intentions" approach has a lot of merit. But I do get the discomfort.

Once again I’ll be the shithead and state that I am pro traffic cam and pro shot spotter

As to your OP, what in gods good name is a Flock camera? Have you taken the same position with your iPhone listening to your conversations just so we’re consistent? What about Alexa and Echo dot?

Flock camera

Reads license plates to identify stolen vehicles/plates, wanted criminals or vehicles associated with crimes.

License plate reader. Don't know what echo dot is and don't use alexa ever. Don't know how to get away from my phone because I need it for work but I get your point

this is why the overwhelming majority of Small Town police departments can't even really be described as police departments. They're just the local mob. If you live in the town and you are one of the so-called good people you can reliably expect that if you get pulled over for DUI or your son gets involved in the salt that the police will gloss it over and drive you home or something like that. But if you're not one of the so-called good people you can reliably expect the equivalent of mob Justice.

That's not really a police department by any normal definition

For places with violent crime, Flock has been very helpful.

They say they use it to track down bad guys. Someone commits a crime. Used together, these flock cameras interact with other ones across the US. This is how we're able to track down people who might be terrorists as well.

Hard to find the right mix of security and freedom.

If we don't catch the bad guys, people bitch that the feds, state and locals aren't doing their job.

When you trade your liberty for security you get neither. This is especially true where I live because the crime is zero. I don't know where the keys to my house are. I've never locked the door, never needed to

You could come close to eliminating crime altogether if you implement a full police state.

Should we do that?

I'm sure cameras watching your every move will reduce crime but that's a terrible trade off

No but we should have harsher sentences and if localities want Flock to make their city safer and to solve crimes then good on them. People who complain about privacy ASSUME they are being watched or tracked by Flock and that’s ignorant of how they are being used. Could you be? Sure I guess you could but you give up your privacy daily with your cell phone, which you freely give up way more private info from. Flock has done far more to solve crimes than it has to invade privacy. Many jurisdictions have limits on how long anything can be stored.
