communism is about much more than just economic/production policy
Communism, if fully realized, is a society ruled by anarchy(no governement, purely democratic).
It never crossed the minds of Marx and Engels, just how to take the means of production, back from the hands of the central authority they used to collect the means. That right there is why it is a failed ideology.
Seems right. Marx was pretending to be a political philosopher just to pick up young women and was never actually productive himself. I still cannot believe those ideas took off.

Florida's orange growers co-op is the largest in America. REI is up there.
I have nothing against socialism when applied to business. If that is the business model you want, far be it from me to stop you. Triump motorcycles survived the BSA debacle by going socialistic for a few years.

It does okay in Scandinavian countries and the Netherlands.
In Sweden, soft socialism did a lot of damage to their economy.
Grok says:
quote:
Sweden is not and has never been a socialist country in the classical sense (government ownership of the means of production). It is a market economy with private ownership of businesses, free trade, and competitive markets, combined with a large welfare state, high taxes, and extensive redistribution—often called the "Nordic model" or social democracy.

The Social Democratic Party dominated politics for much of the 20th century and built a generous welfare system, but Sweden's economy has always relied on private enterprise (e.g., companies like Volvo, IKEA, Ericsson, and H&M). Many outsiders mislabel it as "socialism," but Swedish leaders and economists have repeatedly clarified it is not.

Historical Overview (Roughly 1955–2025)Pre-1970: Rapid Growth Under a Relatively Free Market
From the late 19th century through the 1960s/early 1970s, Sweden was one of the fastest-growing economies in the world. It benefited from classical liberal reforms (free trade, deregulation), neutrality in WWII (avoiding destruction), natural resources, and a skilled workforce. Public spending was low (under 20-30% of GDP in the 1950s-60s). By around 1970, Sweden ranked among the top 4 richest OECD countries in GDP per capita.

1970s–1980s: Expansion of the Welfare State and "Socialist" Experiment
This period saw dramatic growth in government: higher taxes, increased regulation, expanded public sector employment, wage compression, and generous benefits. Public spending rose sharply (reaching ~60%+ of GDP). Sweden moved toward more socialist-inspired policies after already being rich.

Economic outcomes deteriorated: slower growth relative to peers, declining competitiveness (high costs), and falling OECD GDP per capita rankings. The economy became less dynamic, with issues like high inflation and devaluations.

Free market capitalism is the best system so far as the underlying government hasn’t been perverted by the monied interests.
That said, lobbyists, no term limit politicians and a free for all given the Citizens United decision have screwed the average taxpayer and led to this point where socialism is even considered as a path. We need major reforms to get back on track. Otherwise the masses will vote in an alternative.

Because absolute power corrupts absolutely.
Those in charge will never split equally. There is not enough resources for everyone to get the same amount of anything. It will never work. Never pipe dream..

the whole theory of socialism negates human nature
one of the first things i remember my foreman talking about when i was 18 was that if you had 4 laborers and one was lazy and wasnt working, that the other 3 will work at his pace. you had to fire the lazy one or it was a cancer to the team
Socialist society will quickly see that hard work and effort does not give a benefit and that they can coast to get the same reward.
and only the ruling elite in a socialist society gain for socialism

Even the original pilgrims tried it. It failed miserably. Takers have always and will always take.
Mao's giant state farms failed because the hard working got the same compensation as did the slackers and the lazy. After a while, the slacker mindset spread. Famine happened as productivity fell dramatically.
When Ping broke up the state farms and gave the land to the farmers with a market economy, the famine vanished within the first year.

We already have a sort of socialism with the way we allocate taxes for schools, roads, and local government. Now we just need to expand those existing systems to provide other social services that serve the working class further.

None of that is socialism. Government services =/= socialism
Why do people always say they are?

People don’t even take care of their family. Why would you expect them to care for strangers?
The more government is involved in caring for the community, the less the individuals think they should have to do.
